Dr. Anthony Fauci is weighing in on packed college football stadiums seen across the country over the last weekend.

Speaking to Jim Sciutto on CNN’s “New Day,” Fauci said he was concerned after seeing crowds of people in stadiums amid the delta variant COVID outbreak.

“I don’t think it’s smart,” said Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert. “Outdoors is always better than indoors, but even when you have such a congregate setting of people close together, you should be vaccinated. And when you do have congregate settings, particularly indoors, you should be wearing a mask.”

Fauci said he believes the growing case numbers and packed hospitals could leave the country stuck in “outbreak mode” with more areas adopting mandates to cut the spread.

“There are going to be organizations, there are going to be universities, there are going to be colleges, there are going to be sports events, travel events, where the rule is going to be if you want to participate, you get vaccinated,” Fauci said. “If not – sorry, you’re not going to be able to do it.”
