For the first time in the eight-year history of the College Football Playoff, a team from a Group of 5 conference has cracked the top four in the selection committee's rankings, which would assure it a spot in one of the two semifinals games on New Year's Eve.

Cincinnati, one of just three undefeated teams left in the FBS, is ranked No. 4 in the latest rankings that were released on Tuesday night, behind No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Alabama.

Michigan is No. 5, followed by Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Ole Miss and Oklahoma. The selection committee's final rankings will be released on Dec. 5.

The Bearcats jumped one spot after Oregon, which was No. 3 in last week's rankings, lost 38-7 at Utah on Saturday. The Bearcats blasted SMU 48-14 at home in one of their most impressive performances of the season.

"I think it's awesome, for our entire team, our community, our campus. But we stress to the guys, that we have a ways to go," Cincinnati coach Luke Fickell said on ESPN's rankings release show. "But the excitement about it, is well deserved for a group that's fought hard all year."

If Ohio State and Cincinnati win out, we'd likely meet in the CFP semi finals.

Good luck with that lack of run game and defense.

That’s your final 4. Bama beats UGA in SEC ship and UGA goes to 3 or 4. Bama goes to 2. No way NCAA will not allow the chance for those 2 to play in CFP ship. Cincy gets blasted by OSU in other semifinal game.

They would definitely be a huge underdog to win it all if that's the 4 teams that make the playoffs

They appear to be positioning Notre Dame to get in the top 4 as well Bama and Georgia play each other as do Ohio State and Michigan,

Odds are Georgia wins the SEC championship game. Then it looks like Georgia, WHomever wins the OSU/Mich game plus Cincinnati and then the Notre Dame. Based on the top six there now.

I think Georgia, Ohio St, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and Cincinnati all win out.

I also fear Cincinnati getting left out in favor of Notre Dame or Oklahoma.

ND getting in over Cinci is impossible. Oklahoma, maybe.

Hope this doesn't end up being one big troll for Cincy and their fans.

If they win out and still get jumped, then what's even the point?

Notre Dame getting in over Cincinnati will never happen. And if it did, the committee would have a lot of explaining to do.

You have one too many negations here, fella.

If everything goes chalk the rest of the way except for Alabama over UGA in the SECCG, I think it goes like this:

1) Alabama
2) Ohio State
3) UGA
4) Cincinnati

I don't think they pit Alabama and UGA against each other in the Semifinal, so those 2 will be ranked in such a way that they are in opposite semifinals.

I think UGA wins the SEC, though, and it goes like this:

1) UGA
2) Ohio State
3) Cincinnati
4) Notre Dame

That’s been my prediction as well. If Oklahoma State wins out though, I wonder if they have a chance to jump Notre Dame.

They will create the easiest path for the highest ranked sec team, and assure that Ohio State has to beat both sec teams to win title.

Wondering the same. Oklahoma State would have to beat #10 Oklahoma and #8 Baylor while all Notre Dame has left is 3-8 Stanford. Would be really interesting to know how close Notre Dame and Okie State are in the committee's poll.
