The local rec departments have been decimated. I've seen it happen with St. Charles parish. The All Star teams are no longer the best players in the parish, they're the best players not playing travel ball.

Parish ball in ascension is almost a waste of time IMO.

Don't get me wrong, it's full of good kids and parents, it's just that it seems it's the less developed kids. (Physical development, not fundamental)

I've worked as an official for baseball/softball in 2 cities near where I live, but it's night/day how the rec leagues are between the two cities. one still has a good group, the other almost seems nonexistent.

It's kind of sad, because in the smaller town I grew up playing rec league and had a great time.

I can't speak for other people's experiences, obviously, but I've noticed the lack of fundamentals in both (rec and travel) settings. I've done travel umpiring, and even then, it was kind of appalling. It might be an anamoly, but still. You are right, the rec leagues aren't as talented.

Yep. That's one of the many reasons why my kid is playing travel ball. Another is with a team of 12 kids, I would have 6-7 show up for every practice. It's hard to teach a kid baseball when the parents don't bring them to practice.

Yeah, that's another issue I've noticed in local leagues, although for games (I'm not too sure on practices).

No kidding. I have my youngest in the parish league now, we still have no uniforms a month after games started, haven't had a game in two weeks, and general apathy is present I think.

Yeah it's crazy, people love thier baseball here (look at LSU attendance) but the parish league is truly decimated.

I can't bring the boy to the movies without someone trying to recruit us to thier football team though.

Priorities, I guess

If you're going the rec league way, you might want to consider playing in the Gonzales league.

I can see both sides. Here in St. Charles baseball is huge and each community has it's own team, the problem is, your community may have 19 kids so every kid has to play and bat. What our rec department has done is started an advanced league called American. You have to try out and if you are selected you play with kids from all over your parish. This year there were 4 American League teams in the parish. If you are not selected you play National league which is just your local community with in the parish.
American teams play against other American and National only plays against other National.

The only kids eligible for all-stars is American.

AAU basketball, varsity fb Bb and track,

Travel track and football, sprinkle in parish baseball.

I love when parents spend thousands of dollars on their son to play Select/Travel ball and they still end up sucking and riding the bench in high school anyway

Yea, that's great for the kid

Some times travel ball is the best option for a kid/parent but a lot of times it's just parents using it as a status symbol

What criteria should be used to determine if you have a child who is an elite athlete?

Are the extra costs worth the fundamental improvements?

If you have a background in sports you should be able to see if your child is a premier player. If you don't then it'll be a little tougher.

Does he consistently field the ball well, can he accurately throw the ball with good velocity, does he crush the baseball when he hits?
