24% ramp

There was a century I used to ride every year and the first time I did it at 18 I had NO idea what to expect (11,000 feet of total climbing). The first ~70 miles is rolling hills which I was used to but it seriously tilts up for the last 30 miles. I bonked after about 10 miles of climbing and at about 15 miles in there is a 33% wall. It is only about 300 meters but I was shot. I made it about halfway standing on my 42/27 by zig zagging but just couldn't go anymore. I walked the bike the rest of the way up. The problem was it was so steep my shoes were just slipping on the asphalt and I had to walk with my feet on the grass to keep from falling down. My appreciation of the pros in the high mountains skyrocketed that day.

* it was pre-clipless pedals and the soles of my cycling shoes were just hard plastic with no walking nubs/pads of any sort.

My time for the first 70 miles was 3:08 the final 30 miles was 4:43.

Yeah, Alaphilippe and Sagan’s teams will keep them in contention for the finish. Somebody will go on the break to scoop up points...too 4 from today put in a lot of effort, but they also all scooped up mountain points. Meurisse is a good pick to go and Berhane. The break has a good chance, but there is too much at stake for Quickstep and Alaphilippe can finish this one off.

Look for a classics guy like Naesen to be in the break...that could be dangerous.

Stage 6 was fun to watch. Unpredictability is great. When one team dominates it sucks the fun out if it.

The most interesting thing today was that G Thomas looked strong but his main domestique, Wout Poels, was toasted early on the climb. If Poels is hurting or out of shape, that could really hurt Thomas and Bernal in the mountains.

Sad to see Tejay fade. Props to him for clawing back on the descent, but he didn’t even get to rest before the final killer climb. He did admit before the stage that it did not suit his style, and he expected to do better in the big mountains with lesser grades.

I’m rooting for Pinot. Thomas looked really strong. Bernal suffered some. I don’t think Astana or FDJ is strong enough if Ineos gets all hands on deck, and Movistar just screws up tactics so often.

I am just hoping to see Pinot and Fuglsang really challenge for the top spot.

Also, looking ahead, Alaphilippe could hang around for a while. Tourmalet will probably be too hard, but if he makes past that, he will be there until stage 18 or 19.

I think everyone needs Thomas and Bernal to stay in contention. The second one of them loses significant time and falls into domestique role it is over

Still bummed that Lawson Craddock isn't riding this year. Following him in the tour last year was great.

They will stay in contention...I think that’s a given. Thomas is the favorite and Bernal could podium as well. I wonder how good Mas is feeling to challenge Bernal for the white Jersey? Could be a nice race inside the race.

Dylan Groenewegen takes the stage by inches. Gen. Class placing stays the same at 1 & 2 w/ 6 second differential

Alaphillipe is going to be attacking again tomorrow to get back in yellow I'm sure. Good stage for him.

Wish I could've seen it.

My recording randomly switched to Nascar with just a few miles to go.

My recording cut off a few miles from the finish? Is this a NBC sports issue? The pos that is cox cable issue ? Or the Frenchies started the race late?. Aggravated

I have the ad-free on NBC gold since last year and it is WELL worth the 50 bucks. I get every race from the TDF to the Giro just before the tour. I recommend it highly. The commentary, interviews and countryside historical tours they do while the races go on are worth it alone. That to say mine didn’t cut out bc I watch on that. It’s all the full races.. no commercials.

On another note.. this frickin SUCKS:

Damn. Must be pretty serious because these guys always amaze me with the pain they can ride through.

I recorded it on NBCS on DirecTv and got the whole thing. As soon as it was over, they went to NASCAR practice (practice!) rather than having the usual post-race booth commentary from Christian and Horner.

Is Sagan having bike issues now?

No just water time.

Maybe one of my favorite stages in a long time. De Gendt seems to be in a breakaway every Tour he participates in so great way for him to win, but the freaking BALLS on Alaphilippe are incredible. Dude just took yellow back the exact way he earned it the first time.
