Thoughts on the Kentucky vs Arizona 2nd rd match-up?

First of all it's a travesty that these 2 teams will have to potentially play each other in the second rd. Arizona has the best player in CBB and another 7 footer who is a really good player.
On the other hand it seems to me Kentucky has finally figured out how to play as a team and they are rolling at the moment. I've watched a ton of basketball over the last month or so and I believe Kentucky is playing as good as anyone.
I'm conflicted because if these teams were in different brackets I would have picked both to go to the Final Four. Anyone have any insight on this potential match-up?

I have Arizona winning it all, so they’ll probably get bounced in the first.
In all seriousness, Ayton is far and away the biggest freak in college basketball. I don’t know that Kentucky or anyone else has an answer for him. The kid at Texas is the only one that comes to mind athletically.

I looked at this matchup in depth. Kenpom, rpi , every tourney team win/loss and reasons, etc.
Long story short. I have Kentucky.
They need to show up and shoot well, and play like they did in the tourney. But they are a bad matchup for zona. And the hype with zona is primarily focused on their superstar forward. But Kentucky has enough talent and balance to overcome him.
90% of final 4 teams in the last 10 years were in the kenpom top 20.
Uk- 18
Az- 21

Here is a side by side comparison just for you (actually i wanted to look for myself yessterday)
I lean AZ because:
Kentucky #3 opp 3 pt%, great perimeter team, but a lot of their bigs are undersized. Leading rebounder per game is 7th in minutes. Kentuck #107 vs opp 2 pt. AZ will get high percentage looks, #297 in 3 pt attempted per game
++ add to this kentucky is awful as a team ft % under 70%
if you are out there and can read this goldennugget, i know season long stats yada yada... it is better than nothing dick

good stuff. Outside shots will be crucial for Kentucky. Out of curiosity, how far do you have Kentucky going in your bracket?

Pac12 was weak. One team got in the tourney straight up. One. Az.
Ucla got bounced by bonnies.
Azst should win tonight and lose next round.
So, the az offensive efficiency is inflated, at 15 with their sos in the 60's. And a defense rated around 70.
Uk has a top 10 sos and a top 25 offense and defense.

very helpful info. I think it's gonna come down to if Kentucky can hit their outside shots. If they do they will win and if not Arizona will get the W. Gonna be a great game to watch

I had Virginia smothering them, but deandre going down changes the equation.
It's probably a coin flip game now.
Tenn/cincy are both similar to uva, but poorer versions.
Uk can go to the final 4 if uva is really stagnant on offense without deandre. They only lose 9 point per game, but hunter was the one guy that could spark their offense when it slowed.
It's really a shame. I thought it was UVA's year. They could deal with offensive teams (Duke), great athletic rebounding teams (unc), and can grind out games against other good defenses (Clemson).
I don't know what to do with them now. Are they still good enough to get to elite 8, final 4, championship? I just don't know.

one of the best second round games i can remember

I have Arizona mainly because of the lack of rim protection for Kentucky in man to man.
Kentucky needs to run some type of zone to keep Ayton and Ristic off the boards. It will get ugly if they dont.
Teams that gave Arizona problems are the ones with 7 footers who can stretch the floor a la UCLA and Purdue.
Arizona is a safe pick.

Arizona plays poor defense. And Kentucky will drive the ball and have the bigs sitting for half the game. lol

I dont see what is so "lol"...
Kentucky is just as likely to not have any interior presence halfway through the first attempting to stop Ayton in man to man defense. Kentucky's post defense sucks.

Tough to call considering Kentucky won’t make it to that matchup...

this is taking kenpom to a level beyond what it is
also, is that percentage a postseason top 20?

You are assuming Kentucky beats Boise or Davidson or whomever they play in the first round.
Posted on 3/14/18 at 7:02 pm to kywildcatfanone
davidson relies heavily on the 3. that is playing in to kentucky's greatest strength their perimeter defense. kentucky should be able to win even if by a little

Its sad they may have to meet that early.. But Zona is A horrible matchup for UK... They will dominate UK....

I have Zona losing to Virginia in my bracket. It’s more bc I want to protect myself from Davidson upsetting Kentucky. My bracket is all I care about.
