This MIZZ/UGA shows just why the playoff sucks and why expanding it would make it worse

It’s a cool story or whatever, but even if UGA wins, they still win out and are in the playoffs.

It used to be a huge deal but you really get one freebie if you’re in the SEC. As the playoff expands, it will make more games like this effectively meaningless, or with less outside interest than before. That’s what used to make CFB so awesome was you could ruin another teams chances at any moment

In just about every system we have had, a 12-1 SEC Champ UGA makes the NC.

I don't understand the gripe here.

Tradition and excitement such as this mean little when weighed against stacks of cash.

Meh, I don't like those years with more than 2 1-loss teams (or 2-loss chammps) and a committee deciding which two teams are worthy.

I bet there were purists like you whining when they expanded the ball tourney to 64 teams. You people are just naturally resistant to change.

I don’t disagree with your premise, but the 4 team system has been such a disaster, I’m not gonna lose any sleep over it going away.

Maybe a bigger system will lead to more spread out talent.

I think it’s hard to argue that the playoff era has been nearly as entertaining as the BCS era was.

UGA can go 9-3 and make Top 12.

An undefeated OSU, Clemson, USC, Michigan, or OKST would all likely get in over and SEC East team with a loss to Mizzou

Ohio State and Michigan can’t both go undefeated.

OSU runs the table this year. No one will challenge them until the playoffs.

Four teams is plenty. The next eight won’t survive.

Probably why I used OR, while also including 3 additional teams

In the old days with shorter seasons and ties, they may or may not get in if there’s enough undefeated teams

and probably because everything we’ve manufactured in the last 40 years is either redundant or just sucks

I still don't understand this argument.

For every game like this one that you think is meaningless (it might determine whether or not Georgia gets a bye in the expanded CFP), what about games that are meaningless with the current system?

Right now, a game between a 9-2 LSU and a 9-2 Texas A&M is meaningless because the best that they are playing for is most likely a non-playoff bowl. However, with a 12 team playoff, this game becomes huge. The winner will most likely make the playoffs.

Doesn't it seem like an expanded playoff might make more games meaningful? If Georgia had lost, then, as you say, they would be eliminated in the old system. That would also mean that all of the rest of the games for Georgia would then become meaningless. How is that a good thing?

I really miss the old days when conference championships were a HUGE deal, as was making a New Year's Day Bowl. While the National Championship was still a big deal, it didn't overshadow winning conference championships. Unfortunately however, that ship has sailed.

4 teams is too many.

Just ask Oklahoma or any non-P5.

Anything more than 4 is BEYOND stupid and ridiculous.

This

The amount of games that become "meaningful" actually increases with an expanded playoff.

Expanding the playoff is about giving more teams something to play for. There is only about 6-7 teams that have a shot every year. Expanding it to 12 gives a whole lot more teams something to play for and a chance to at least play a game on the field.

And TV money.

It’s a beautiful 55 degree December day in South Louisiana. Christmas spirit is in the air as its the week before Christmas. Typically you are spending the day with the wife and kids, bouncing between stores, finding last minute gifts. But this particular year is 2026. LSU made the playoffs as the 5th seed after an 11-1 season losing only to Alabama. 12th seeded Pac 12 runner up USC is coming to Baton Rouge. You have a tailgate set up, enjoying the weather, Christmas themed tailgate songs in the air as the scene is getting set for one of the biggest games ever in Tiger Stadium.

Sounds terrible, definitely wouldn’t want playoff expansion

The way Auburn was hosed after going undefeated in the SEC is the reason there should be a playoff. Unfortunately the 4 team playoff has led to uneven distribution of power in cfb. 12 team playoff is the right move.
