the NBA is at 30 teams. 31 is a bad number, 32 is a great one. Seems they would try to add 2 teams if expansion was the route. Finding another expansion candidate would be explored. You can make an argument the league can hardly support 1 more team much less 2, so relocation could make more sense

I know the kings ownership was looking at Virginia beach. Could possibly be the two sites. Or maybe give Canada another go at a 2nd franchise in a plane like Montreal. Or maybe Kansas city or st Louis

Seattle got a raw deal when the Sonics left. Would be cool for them to get a team back. Hopefully no other city has to lose their team for that to happen.

32 teams is a good number and there are major markets without an NBA team or markets that have neither currently an NBA or NHL team. Seattle is a major market has tons of. money and should get an NBA team.

Kansas City, San Diego, Cincinnati don't have winter sports teams and a history of the NBA. Kansas City has a new Arena that is NBA ready and Missouri and Kansas is basketball country. Cincy has potential with a new arena. Louisville may be a good option as well and they have a decent arena, but you're directly competing with the Cardinals but they had an ABA team.

Seattle and Las Vegas get expansion teams in 2020?

Put teams in Seattle and Vegas, then move Memphis and New Orleans to the east.

Largest US-Canada markets sans NBA:

Seattle - 4,700,000 (hugely successful former NBA city with multiple arena plans)

Montreal - 4,100,000 (would they want NBA or rather get the Expos back, who play during the Habs off-season?)

San Diego - 3,300,000 (two time NBA loser but the loss of Chargers leaves a sports void during the fall and winter)

Tampa-St. Pete - 3,000,000 (include Lakeland and Sarasota-Bradenton and the pop number is over 4 mil, but only 85 miles from Orlando)

St. Louis - 2,900,000 (stagnant market growth wise and team would directly compete with the Blues. Fun fact: defunct ABA St. Louis team owners get a cut from Spurs, Pacers, Nets, and Nuggets.)

Pittsburgh - 2,600,000 (shrinking market with saturated sports market)

Vancouver - 2,500,000 (their NBA attendance figures are quite good considering the decrepit on court product)

Kansas City - 2,400,000 (They have an arena ready to go)

Columbus - 2,400,000 (will they be able to keep their MLS team from moving to Austin? Would directly compete with Blue Jackets and Ohio State)

Las Vegas- 2,400,000 (New arena, growing market but one new major franchise and another on the way)

Cincinnati - 2,200,000 (stagnant market, no arena)

Raleigh-Durham- 2,100,000 (fast growing market but NHL team has attendance issues)

Austin - 2,100,000 (fast growing but close to San Antonio)

Nashville - 2,000,000 (fast growing)

Norfolk - Virginia Beach - 1,800,000 (stagnant growth but 2nd largest market sans major pro sports)

Greensboro - Winston-Salem - 1,700,000 (once tried to lure the Minnesota Twins)

Jacksonville - 1,600,000 (keep the Jags out of London with high home attendance figures before worrying about NBA, no arena)

Louisville - 1,500,000 (runner-up for the Grizzlies, decent corporate base for a market its size)

They should have approved the arena in SoDo instead. A large majority of the fans wanted that arena rather than the Key Arena remodel.

I think the NHL will be adopted instantly in Seattle. I do think it will take a while for the NBA though. There are a lot of fans still pissed off about how everything went down 11 years ago when the team was stolen.

They deserve to get a team back. But is NBA looking to expand? I thought they didn’t want expansion not long ago?

I don’t think the Grizzlies had much of a chance in Vancouver. If ownership had been more patient like Raptors, maybe they could have made it. Has an expansion team ever left after just 5-6 years in it’s city of orgination? Seems awfully quick Grizzlies bailed on Vancouver.
