BREAKING: @SeattleCouncil votes 7-1 to approve $660m #KeyArena MOU package with @OvgSeattle.
It clears the way for a NEW Arena at Seattle Center by 2020, and potential #NHL franchise.
More details to come on @KING5Seattle.#Seattle

It would be a decent name for a hockey team too

That’s what I’m wondering. Is the nhl team gonna take the name?

According to Daniels, the renovations will amount to $660 million. Though it does open up the door for the NBA’s expansion back into Seattle, Daniels reports that the renovations are primarily to attract the NHL.
There is widespread belief among many people at City Hall that approval on Monday will send a strong signal to the National Hockey League about Seattle’s interest in housing a team in a new building on the Seattle Center campus. The NHL however, has remained mum on the possibilities.
This is a decision that has been anticipated by the council for quite some time, according to Paul Rogers of Sonics Rising. Chris Hansen’s memorandum of understanding for SoDo Arena expired after five years yesterday which, cleared the way for the council to go all-in OVG group’s memorandum with the council.
Opens way to new NHL franchise and the Sonics potentially returning.

Folks have been trying to get an arena for both the NHL & Sonics. I don't know if the Sonics will fail this go around but this city has changed A LOT in 10 years. There has been a ton of growth.

Is there any team in danger of moving or would the NBA need to expand again?
Most small market teams I can think of have ownership interested in staying put there or the city has made major concessions to keep them there, such as Sacramento.

A full team of Shawn Kemp's kids.

That would be awesome. The fact that the NBA left Seattle and Vancouver for OKC and Memphis is a joke.

Yeah, the 2 latter cities have had such a hard time supporting those teams.
But seriously I do hope to see the Sonics again.

It's ironic
I had the brew she had the chronic
The Lakers beat the Supersonics

They didn't fail. Were hugely successful. Set numerous NBA attendance records and had one of the leagues longest sellout streaks with the leagues 2nd highest priced ticket.
The team was moved because Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz is a vindictive, shortsighted prick who sold the team on short notice to the guy who vowed to bring the NBA to OKC. David Stern was involved here too because he is also a vindictive prick who wanted to reward OKC and his buddy while telling Washington politicians to suck it. They didn't bow down to him when he demanded a replacement for an arena less than 10 years old.
