The NFL is in a precarious position regarding Ezekiel Elliot

On the one hand, they REALLY want to suspend him. Several NFL owners REALLY want him suspended. They have been investigating him for 13 months and to not suspend him at this point would be an embarrassment and they walk away with egg on their faces.
On the other hand, Elliot has been cleared of all wrongdoing by the authorities. In an unusual case, the police have actually refused the NFL any access into their investigation because they determined it was a plot to railroad him by the ex-GF. The players REALLY DONT want him suspended. The NFLPA has already said they plan to sue should he be suspended, and the Cowboys ownership has promised to appeal. The NFL has reportedly been told by their lawyers any suspension has a high chance of being overturned in court. Suspending also sets a dangerous precedent from the players perspective.
So basically the NFL has no way to come out if this looking good. Either they come across as incompetent for taking a year plus to investigate something only to admit they have nothing, or they suspend him and end up looking incompetent when it's overturned on appeal and the players lose even more faith in the league.

Jerry Jones comes out and says "Elliot is a good guy".

Without commenting on anything else, this has never stopped to NFL before.

It would be the first time ever a player was suspended without being convicted of or actively being investigated for a violation of the law, or for violating/being accused of violating league rules.
A suspension would basically amount to "He did some stuff in his private life a bunch of rich white dudes dislike". And it will go over very poorly.

One of the insider guys like Alex Marvez was saying a month or two ago that league just wants to hang this over his head for a while to embarrass him, but they really can't do much.
Why do the owners even care?

At first they came for Brady and I said nothing...

Just because you're rich doesn't mean you can't be a petty a-hole.

Correct, but they've never been denied access to a police investigation before. Any evidence they produce will be from private investigations. Additionally, every player ever suspended for a violation of the law was either convicted, being actively investigated or had plead out at the timd the suspension was handed down. No player ever 100% cleared and declared innocent has been suspended for the accused offense.

They've suspended players who were later cleared, and suspended players who were cleared but why they did violated league rules. The case is different here.
Worse yet, the crime he was accused and cleared of happened before he was even a employed by the Dallas Cowboys.

Brady violated a league rule that amounted to cheating

What percentage of the casual fan would know that? When I read your first post I immediately thought of Big Ben and Greg Hardy. Both never were charged with crimes.

Disagree. It will have nothing to do with race and everything to do with the NFL overstepping which they have shown a repeated tendency to do. I'll be pissed because I don't think the NFL should be playing moral police, not because Zeke in black.

Well then what the hell is it about? I figured since the authorities weren't pursuing the charges then the NFL would clear him to play since their product is better with Zeke on the field. There must be something we don't know about.

If this is the truth, then I think they come away looking great. They took their time to fully investigate the matter and found no wrongdoing by the player, so he isn't suspended. It would show the players that it isn't always just about PR and "protecting the shield."
