With the current trend towards super teams, the NBA would be far more competitive and entertaining if it did away with conferences and seeded teams 1-16 in the playoffs. Look at this potential seeding just from last year:

1. GSW vs 16 Chicago
2. San Antonio vs 15 Portand
3. Houston vs 14 Indiana
4. Boston vs 13 Milwaukee
5. Cleveland vs 12 Memphis
6. Toronto vs 11 Atlanta
7. Los Angeles Clippers vs 10 OKC
8. Utah vs 9 Washington

2nd round

1. GSW vs Washington
2. San Antonio vs OKC
3. Houston vs Toronto
4. Boston vs Cleveland

Semis

1. GSW vs Cleveland
2. Houston vs San Antonio

I know ultimately GSW would've still won but the whole playoffs would've been so much more entertaining. And even more so in this upcoming year with George on OKC, Hayward with Boston, and Paul on Houston. A possible Harden and Paul vs Lebron in the semi finals, yes please.

They need to do this, otherwise the Eastern Conference playoffs will continue to be ran through by Cleveland and GSW could at least be challenged this way.

It was brought up a couple times in the past, but it was said the East owners wouldn't go for it. They know they have an easier path to the playoffs and that's money in their pockets.

Get rid of conferences and only have 8 teams make the playoffs. Or 12 with byes for the top 4 like in the NFL and a best of 3 first round series.

And in your hypothetical, how are the 1 and 2 meeting in the semis?

Every time power shifts in sports to one-sided, this argument gets brought up.

NFL

1970's (because of the AFC's dominance)
1980's (because of the NFC's dominance)
1990's (because of the NFC's dominance)
2000's (because of the AFC's dominance)

Sports is cyclical.

Yeah but the east has been the lesser conference for most of the past two decades now and it's not looking to change any time soon.

That being said it wouldn't have changed much this past postseason. Can't really say that most of those matchups are significantly better than what we got in real life. Maybe if in this hypothetical scenario the Spurs are healthy but even then I doubt they pose much of a challenge despite the first half of game one in that series.

Kawhi was a monster last year. He sure as hell would've made a difference.

If Kawhi doesn't get hurt, they win Game 1. GS probably wins Game 2, but your smoking some shite if you think GS blows San Antonio out twice in San Antonio if Kawhi plays.

Hell, Cleveland should've tied the series up 2-2 if they didn't choke Game 3 away.

Absolutely. Conferences are antiquated.

You're putting way too much stock into one half of basketball.

GS ran through the playoffs, including Cleveland.

Should they bring back conferences when it works better that way?

And the West in the 80s and I would say 90s too was far weaker than the east at the time. They didn't change the format then why now?

This isn't some hot take brought on by the recent dominance of the western conference. The Western Conference has been better ever since MJ retired. A superstar in basketball can instantly make a pretender into a contender in more than any other sport. You throw Brady or Rodgers on the Browns and they still miss the playoffs. You throw Lebron on the Sixers and theyre a 3-4 seed in today's East. These stacked teams, 95% of which are in the West, make the playoffs dull and a foregone conclusion. Make these super teams all play each other and it's a much more competitive playoff.

Did you even watch the two games in Cleveland? Or the games in Utah against the Jazz?

GS was dominant at times but did not run through the playoffs.

all it takes to tip or further tip balance between the conferences in the NBA is a couple of star moves. NFL is not a good comparison

the better question is what exactly is the purpose of conferences in today's NBA other than regular season scheduling?
