The NBA during the 80's/90's was NOT as physical as people made it out to be

“LeBron, Steph, and James Harden couldn’t cut it in the 80’s/90’s. Put them up against the Bad Boys in Detroit or Big Oakley/Anthony Mason/X-Man in NY"
Old heads love to resort to this to justify a particular era as being more laboring.
Outside of the Pistons and Knicks (teams that weren't even physically dominant at the same time), who else was out there "shoving guys around and giving hard fouls"? There was a quite a lot of open-court play during those times, especially in the West.
People cherry pick a small portion of great defensive teams/players and act like every single team/player was on that level, especially in the regular season.

By all accounts, the 80s Celtics were a pretty physical defensive team too

Bill Laimbeer and the Pistons, New York Knicks, Celtics. I thought I remember Kobe saying his days were more of a finesse game, where traditional fouls of the 90s became flagrant.

Barkley was knocking the shite out of people all over the court.
In between doing stuff like beating Lambier's face, squaring off with Charles Oakley, and bouncing the ball off Shaq's head.

... all of which were fouls.
I can point to flagrant fouls in today’s games too and be like “see look how physical it is!!”

Boston celtics opponents points per game
1980----104
1981----105.6
1982----106.7
1983----105.6
1985----108.1
1986----104.7
1987----106.0
1988----107.7
1989-----108.1
People need to understand. Defense was not good in the 80s. They just hit people every now and then

PLEASE PLEASE watch the gifs in this thread on Twitter. The comments are hilarious too but it really shows that "tough" 80/90s "defense" that Jordan had to get through!

Athletes have only gotten slower and less athletic since the 90s. Lebron would be gassed if he tried to keep up with the 70/80s players
Heat had physical teams. Phx/Hou had some battles. SA was a physical team. Hand checking wasn’t a thing. Sonics and Blazers were tough. Pacers were always tough. (Dale Davis FTW) Those Hot Rod cavs teams were rugged.

Why do people put this era of the NBA on a pedestal so much?
Message boards for the most part are filled with people in their upper 20s-mid 30s
Those people will think basketball is at its best now
The next biggest group of message board posters are people in their upper 30s-mid 40s. They will like the 80s/90s and glorify that
If you ask my dad about 80s basketball, he will say it was a bunch of standing around shite defense where guys just looked to fight.
He will say real basketball was in the 70s

people act like the 80's NBA was a bunch of street fights every night

Lebroon and Stef would cry like babies if they got knocked around. Watching Bill Laimbeer taking Lebrons head off as he goes to the rim would give me great pleasure, Lebron cries when people defend him.
It all started with Jordan, dont get in the way of the superstar or it will be a foul. Thats why nobody plays defense anymore.

I'm not saying that today's guys wouldn't survive in the 80's or 90's, but they let things happen to superstars then that they don't let happen today.
