The meltdown over the Bengals/Raiders call is ridiculous

This wasn’t a case where a whistle resulted in all the other players stopping. The receiver was already wide open and the ball was already almost to him. Nobody on the Raiders was impacted during the play by the whistle. The play was a touchdown earned by the Bengals. Had the technicality actually been called correctly, it would have robbed them of that earned touchdown.

Yes, the play shouldn’t have been a TD by the rule book. This was a unique circumstance however where the wrong call resulted in the correct outcome. The bitching about it makes no sense. I’d argue that had the inadvertent whistle cost them a legit TD THAT would be when we should bitch.

Yeah the right result happened by ignoring the rule. Implementing the rule would have resulted in a team actually being cheated out of the true result.

It’s not really debatable.

As a raider fan, I’m not even mad about the call. It honestly had no outcome on the play. I do like that that crew is getting a spotlight on them because they were downright awful

I agree they are shitting on Burrow and the Bengals by wasting most of the halftime show whining about that shite

Ref should not have blown the whistle. Let the booth review the call afterwards.

I agree. If anything calling “by the rule” would’ve been an even worse call by taking away a touchdown on an official error

The media and internet is upset because it went against the Raiders who they see as their wholesome champions fighting for good after firing the evil Jon Gruden.

The refs knew they fricked up and did the right thing by giving them the TD. The score didn't cost the Raiders the game when they had numerous opportunities to win just as the Bengals had chances to blow them out. If the refs took that TD away because of their frickup then we would've talked about that.

This is what bugs me

Scenario:
A running breaks through on a 80 yd touchdown and no one around him for 20yds. Then 5 yards from the goal line a ref by accident/or not blows the whistle.

So by rule the touchdown wouldn’t count?

The rule is clear. The officials didn’t follow the rule and it was the difference in the game. No argument otherwise.

Agree with all that but it was very weird in real time. Boyd should have sold it better.

It was the right booth call given how late the whistle. Bengals likely win even if overturned.

Are people melting over this? The outcome of the play was determined.

If any rule should not be zero tolerance, it's the one where a team is indiscrimately penalized despite following all the rules they can control, because of the frick up of a non-participating party.

I kind of think it's true in both college and pro that the official has the power to award points at his discretion. Now, I think it's reserved for situations such as your breakaway TD, but then someone comes off the other team's sideline and tackles the runner or something.

But this is easy: the official can award points, and awarding points would be the exact right decision in a world where all of these facts are known (which they are).
