Interesting rule change in college football. On a kickoff, the receiver can signal for and make a fair catch inside the 25 and get the ball at the 25 regardless of where he caught it. The kickoff return continues to fade away. Will the NFL follow?

Well then they just ruled kick-offs are null and void and everybody gets the ball at the 25.

No more kicks short of the goal line.

Lets just place the ball on the 25 after every change of possession.

Kickers can still kick it out and be penalized though

So does that mean if a returner muffs the fair catch and it's taken by the kickoff team that the other team gets the ball at the 25 as well?

If they want to discourage kick returns, make it the 20 yard line when the ball goes out of, or hits the ground in, the end zone. 25 yard line if the ball is caught by the receiving team and downed in the end zone.

First part gives the kicking team an incentive to kick deep, second part gives the receiving team an incentive to forgo the return.

This is terrible. The sky kick then blasting the return man at the 10 yard line is such a huge momentum building and gets the crowd jacked.

The only reason kickoffs still exist is because of onside kicks. They should just make the rule “if you’re kicking off, it has to be an onside kick, otherwise they’re getting it at the 25” at this point. I hate that but they’re just going to continue to change rules so there are as few kickoff returns as possible

The proposal will be sent to conferences for feedback before being considered by the Playing Rules Oversight Panel on April 13. If approved by the panel, the change would go into effect for the 2018 season.

onside kicks would still be in play and the returner still has the option to return it if given the option by the coach.

more squib kicks could be in play also to just to check the laziness of a team if the trends are there.

the NFL thinks its shite doesn't stink. They've already set it up where you can get a quick commercial break after a likely touchback anyway.

So player catches the ball on the 1 yd line and they advance 24 yards more yards for doing nothing?

Kickoffs suck.

Solution - team kicking off removes the tee and ball is placed on LoS. They are given 4th and 15. Most will punt, but they can go for the first down to retain possession.

Punts are far safer than kickoffs.
Punts are far more interesting than kickoffs.
Onside kicks suck and are entirely luck-based events.
Going for it on 4th and 15 has a higher success rate than the onside kick and is actually football, not some weird kick.

Yep. Time for kickers to perfect squib kicking. A line drive shot that bounces around the 30 or 25 should do the trick.

Another possibility is to eliminate the penalty for kicking OOB. Then, instead of boring touchbacks all the time, at least we can watch kickers attempt coffin corners on kickoffs.
