The Consolidation of Power in College Football

Did you know that it has been 23 years since a college football team won their first ever national championship? Ever since the 1996 Florida Gators, every team that has won a consensus national championship at the FBS level already had at least one national title to their credit. Teams winning their first national championship used to happen more frequently, especially in the 1980s, but that trend has fallen off over the last two decades:
1996 - Florida Gators
1993 - Florida State Seminoles
1991 - Washington Huskies
1990 - Colorado Buffaloes & Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
1984 - BYU Cougars
1983 - Miami Hurricanes
1982 - Penn State Nittany Lions
1981 - Clemson Tigers
1980 - Georgia Bulldogs
I feel like in the last 20 or so years, especially with the advent of the BCS, a consolidation of power has happened in the FBS - aided by the machinations of corporate media giants like ESPN. For a time there was a rise in parity, but only because the talent was becoming more evenly spread between the "have" schools. The "have nots" continued to get sloppy seconds in the talent department.
I also feel like college football is further consolidating its power between a handful of schools that have controlled the sport for decades, edging the little guys further and further away from the conversation.
I feel as if the reason for this is the fact that there are just too many schools at the FBS level. Of the 130 teams that currently compete in major college football, less than a dozen of them have a chance to compete for a national championship in any given year.

Yeah. Ihat number is guaranteed to trend toward zero. Most of the teams on his list have won ANOTHER national title since then, kinda proving why this is silly

You are correct.
The list is destined to shrink, but you can simply pick a decade from last century and still find teams that used to be national powers that are not on the radar.
Pitt used to be a national power, even into the 80’s. That will never happen again.
Nebraska?
Miami?
When do Georgia Tech and Colorado get another crack at it?
Will Syracuse ever become a contender again?
Someone from the PAC 12?
CFB is starting to resemble previous NBA seasons where the final 4 can be very predictable.
The fatigue is not because of Bama and Clemson. The fatigue is because the champion will come from the same group of 4-12 teams each year.
You’d be harder pressed to pick the NFL playoffs (12 out of 32 teams) than the CFP. That’s a shame.

Something to consider is that the late 1990s and early 2000s showcased a few teams winning their first NC in a long time. Tennessee, LSU (2003) and Auburn won their first NC’s since the 1950s. Michigan won its first since the 1940s. Texas and USC won their first one since the 70s.

LSU was the first school to get 2 titles during the BCS era.
In 16 seasons of the BCS era, 11 different schools won a national title. LSU, Florida, Florida State and Bama were the only ones who won multiple.
ETA: I think once Saban retires, order will be restored to the force and more SEC schools will be represented in the playoffs.

None of them consensus. That's what we are counting here. AP or Coaches Poll championships only prior to 1998.

And you can't seem to grasp that declining audience, means declining ad revenue, which means less money.
Why should people care to watch a product where, of 130 teams, only 5-6 are guaranteed a chance to win it every single season?

Teams that have had a very real chance to be national champions in the past 25 years:
Oregon (1 title game, 1 other CFP appearance)
Arizona State (undrafted in 1996, lost Rose Bowl)
West Virginia (one game away from the BCS in 2007)
Virginia Tech (Vick)

And then got drilled by Clemson and Wisconsin. They were not a real contender.

The conference title was 10 years ago...over Clemson. Look at the trajectory of the two programs since.

I’ll give the Huskies credit. I think Peterson will keep that program on solid ground.
Oregon has fallen off fast. It’d be nice to see Utah contend, but I don’t think they are close to title contending level.
