The CFP Ranking is Mostly Correct
Posted by MidnightVibe on 11/13/19 at 9:47 am348
I actually would have tOSU and LSU flip-flopped, but I think that one's a pretty close call, and I'm perfectly fine giving LSU the nod based on the quality of their opponents.
I might also be tempted to flip-flop UGA and Bama as I think that the current position reflects a recency weighting by the committee. UGA's loss was considerably worse than Bama's, but they have a better win, so I can give it a pass.
The objective is to get the 4 best teams. I can therefore see no better guidepost than the question of who would be favored on a neutral field tomorrow. For those who bitching about the ranking, and feigning empathy for poor Minnesota and Baylor, make a straight-faced argument as to which teams they'd be favored against.

The fact that you think hypothetical Vegas spreads should be the most important factor in ranking teams shows your opinion on anything to do with this is absolute shite. Delete your thread.

I don't agree wiht this. It's to reward the best overall resumes, ie "most deserving".
If it only boiled down to "best teams", why not go ahead and put alabama and LSU into the playoffs today? I don't think there's any doubt they are 2 of hte best teams. Ditto for OSU, why not just go ahead and secure them a spot in November?

that's retarded. Bama would wipe the floor with minnestota or baylor, but at the end of the day if both those teams hold serve you can't sit there and tell them that despite going 12-0 and winning their league they don't deserve to go because an 11-1 bama that didn't win their division would probably win on a neutral field. It's why you play a schedule and why teh CFB regular season is the most important in sports.

1. The idea is to pick the 4 best teams.
2. This is inherently a forward-looking question.
3. Find me a more accurate predictive barometer of team strength than closing vegas lines. Take as much time as you need.

I don't mind. I agree that reasonable minds can differ on that one.

I fundamentally disagree with this.

I can therefore see no better guidepost than the question of who would be favored on a neutral field tomorrow.
So you would be fine with a 10-2 Bama with no ranked wins getting into the playoffs over a 13-0 Minnesota with 4 ranked wins, and two top 5 wins?

Although your opinion is absolute shite on its face, I’m happy to further shove your face in it.
If Vegas odds were the determinative factor, then a team like Alabama could sit its starters until the end of the season, go something like 7-5, and still be favored over the vast majority of all CFB teams. Would a 7-5 Bama deserve to be in the top 4 because they are a top 4 team according to Vegas? Or would it make more sense to say that the teams who had the best overall seasons are actually the top 4 teams that should be in the playoffs? Do results on the field matter more or less than what Vegas thinks?

We're looking for the 4 best teams, not the 4 teams backed by the most square money.

Then why even play? Alabama could lose to Auburn and still be one of the top 4 teams in Vegas.
On the field results have to matter.
ETA - I see my boy pride has already made this argument.

I mean LSU was going to be #1
They beat 4 teams ranked in the top 10 at kick off.
The offense looks unstoppable.
Ohio State looks amazing but you have to wonder about their opponents.
Their best win lost a lot of shine losing to Illinois the week before

You're honestly gonna sit here and say that if Alabama loses on a late field goal by one point in JHS against a good Auburn team, then they suddenly become a worse team than the Oregon, Minnesota, and Baylors of the world?

Plenty of time for OSU to pass LSU again if they convincingly beat PSU/Michigan. Then we will see what the teams in the CCG are ranked before the game. UGA and Minny both have some teams they could lose to
quote:His answers to this and my question below yours will either have him retract his OP(obviously unlikely) or just show how out of touch he is with Vegas rankings.
