The Cavs could face a $300 million payroll next season if LeBron stays

The Cleveland Cavaliers may have a $300 million roster next season if LeBron James remains with the franchise.
When the dust settled following their sweeping trades last week, the Cavs put themselves in position to break records if they elect to keep their new core together. And, most importantly, if James elects to re-sign in Cleveland or simply pick up his $35.6 million player option for 2018-19.
quote:
Ultimately, however, the Cavs furthered their commitment to the team around James. In the short term by trading for George Hill, Jordan Clarkson, Rodney Hood and Larry Nance Jr., the Cavs added about $10 million in salary and luxury tax to their books this season. That will boost their tax payment to about $50 million and their overall payroll to nearly $190 million, the second highest in league history after the Nets' $193 million in 2013-14.
quote:
If James stays and Hood remains with Cleveland and lands a long-term deal that starts at $12 million or more, the Cavs would likely crest $300 million in total spending based on the contracts they have on their books. That would include roughly $150 million in luxury tax alone.

Danny Ainge's plan of ruining the Cavs was genius!

Cavs give bron all the goodyear sponsorship money off the books. Re-signs at a discount.

And they'll gladly pay it. If LeBron leaves the value of that franchise goes with him.

$300 mill just for player payroll is unreal. The Cavs reported a loss last season even before they cut the check for luxury tax penalties. I know they move money to make it look worse than it really is but I have a hard time believing they're turning a profit. DG says he doesn't care tho.
They're only getting $10 mill/year from Goodyear and the Cavs only keep 25% of the that. 50% goes to the players fund and the other 25% goes to revenue sharing.

I could see $300m for the Warriors’ roster containing Durant, Steph, Green, Iggy, etc. as that is a stacked lineup.
The Cavs’ roster though? Seems pretty damn expensive for a team of Lebron and a bunch of misfit toys. While there is talent there, people aren’t going “Damn, son, I want to play alongside Kevin Love and Tristan Thompson!”

Sucks for the Cavs but LBJ is gonna look good in a Clippers jersey

If Lebron goes to LA clippers and they win a championship, is Jerry west the GOAT FO?

Along with all of the businesses around Quicken Loans arena.
That area supposedly lost $150 million when he left the first time.

Danny Ainge was amazing in that trade.

This is the part of the trade that hasn't been discussed much. Sure they got better and added some athleticism. But Lebron didn't give them a commitment, and if it doesn't work out this year and he bolts, they are now stuck with a bunch of mediocre guys on high contracts. Also, the fact that CLE wasn't offering the Brooklyn pick in any trade deals is a surefire sign that LJ didn't commit to them next year.
Last year they went into the finals with Lebron, Kyrie, Love, Thompson, and then a lot of older bench players (Shump, RJ, D-Will, etc.) Now they are going against Golden State with Lebron, Love, George Hill??, Rodney Hood, Clarkson, and Larry Nance. The bench definitely has more energy and is more athletic, but they aren't beating GS. They have the same issues defensively as they did a year ago, and they are much worse on that end than they were last year.
Ainge absolutely fleeced Cleveland. He saw what many figured and weren't sure about, Stevens was getting the absolute max out of IT last year, and in another system with a worse coach, he wouldn't be very useful. Do you know there are only 2 players in the league with a worse plus minus than IT this year? And Ainge got back Kyrie freaking Irving. Good luck against Golden State

quote:How do you know how IT would have played in the Cavs system at 100% health? You can say he figured out IT wouldn't be healthy this season and CLE didn't, and that's why he fleeced him. But you don't know what max IT would have done with CLE.

quote:Not sure I follow you here. Those dudes aren't world beaters. But they got better this season, as well as younger so if Lebron leaves while they're obviously not competing for anything relevant, they're in a better place next season with younger pieces than they would have been if they didn't make the trades. It's an all around win, CLE did as good as they could have given the pieces they had to move.
