Cut by the Packers a week ago because of a "failure to disclose a medical condition." He last played (for GB) on 10/22 against the Saints. 10/29 was a bye and he sat out 11/5 against the Lions for this "injury" that he claimed may end his career. He gets cut by the Packers on 11/8 (Wednesday) and is picked up by the Patriots LESS THAN 24 HOURS after being cut. And to obviously top it all off, he plays for the Patriots this past Sunday and has 3 catches.

Is it just me or does anyone else not like how Bennett and the Patriots (OF ALL TEAMS..) cheats the system to get him...?

SIAP, but I haven't been on TD much in the past week and this kinda threw me for a frustrated loop of WAT......

How did they cheat? Every team was free to claim him and his salary.

true. I look at it more in the sense that the Packers got cheated and lied to about his circumstances. Packers lost a great player for an unethical reason imo. What they did is technically legal, but I hope it's not a trend for older players to make this excuse to go play for a team they want to. A playoff team that is...

Don't think that's exactly what happened. He claims he gave them full knowledge of his injury and like with many types of injury in the NFL, it was a situation where you could either play through it or get the surgery. He's at the end of his career, it doesn't really make sense to risk his body for Brett Hundley to go 5-11 at QB. So he opts for surgery, and the packers decide they want to waive him and try to recoup their money that they spent

Then the oppurtunity presents itself for him to go to the pats and he decides, that's a situation I would delay the surgery for so yeah let's roll.

It's an extremely rare scenario and the packers could've just IRd him if they didn't want him to go to another team.

well said. I guess I just look at it a little more selfishly since I'm not in his shoes. If I were a player on the Packers, for example, I'd think he was a little Biotch for that move.

That's a pretty easy way to look at it, and I clearly have bias.

We want these dudes to be gladiators and just love the game, but the reality is they only put their bodies on the line for the checks at the end of the day. And everyone knows that but hates it when an athlete admits it.

A "healthy enough" Bennett >>> what the Packers currently have. It's no surprise considering Bennett slipped right back into the Patriots game plan within 3 days of his signing.

Let's not get carried away with me putting great instead of good. I link those terms almost interchangeably to some degree. If you don't like my term "great," just pretend I put "good."

He's at the end of his career,

He's 30. Apparently going to a competing team makes the career-ending injury just not matter anymore.

But then again, exaggeration isn't something new with Martellus Bennett:
quote:

Martellus Bennett told reporters after Sunday's win he "messed up my shoulder" against the Vikings.

"I messed up my shoulder so, I’m in a lot of pain right now," said Bennett. Chicago reporters didn't know what to make of Bennett's claim because he's a very outspoken guy with some tendency to exaggerate, and he didn't miss any meaningful snaps. Bennett "messed up" the shoulder on a circus catch in the second quarter. He finished with seven grabs for 76 yards and two touchdowns.

Martellus Bennett (shoulder) was limited in Bears practice Wednesday.

Bennett told reporters he "messed up" his shoulder in Sunday's win over the Vikings, but he was being a bit dramatic. He's a TE1 this week versus Pittsburgh.

Martellus Bennett (shoulder) was upgraded to "full" in Thursday's practice.

Bennett is fine for Week 3. He's a TE1.

Martellus Bennett is a very physically talented player who is, almost certainly, an outspoken idiot.

I think this blurb sums up his career pretty well:
quote:

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Bears are "entertaining trade offers" for TE Martellus Bennett.

Bennett is entering the third year of a four-year, $20.4 million contract and wants a new deal. With a new regime in Chicago, the Bears are probably at least open to the idea of saving some money and acquiring more picks in the draft with Bennett coming off a career season in which he posted a 90-916-6 line. The "Black Unicorn" led all tight ends in targets with 125. He just turned 28.

So you have a 28 year old TE who just got 90 catches for over 900 yards signed for 2 years at less than $10 mil total and the Bears were entertaining trade offers. That's how much the Bears were okay with letting him go.

He himself has stated he's almost done with football. I wasn't saying that the actual injury is the reason he is at the end of his career. He's got a lot of interests and hobbies outside of football that he's stated for a long time that he's much more interested in than actually playing football. Football is simply a job for him.

Players have options with a lot of in season injuries. Sometimes the option is to play through it or shut down with season ending surgery.

He and his brother, Michael, are high-quality, upstanding individuals of the highest character. I have no idea why you would doubt him.

Patriots did the same thing to the Steelers with L. Blount. He got paid by Pitt then tanked on purpose to get cut all the while he was illegally talking to New England and knew they would grab him right away. Same thing happened here, i don’t dislike the Pats at all but they’re proven cheaters this is just what they do.

he got arrested and suspended and did some dumb shite on the field so the Steelers cut him which cost him some real money

If you really think Blount purposefully got arrested to take less money with the pats

He was cut much later he wasn’t cut for the trouble he got into he was cut because he wasn’t performing. Leveon Bell was arrested with him did the Steelers cut him? And the fact that it was exposed that he was in contact with the Pats the whole time just proves the point.

Did you watch the playoffs that year? It was talked about a lot during the Pats games. You’re free to go and do your own homework I’m not in the habit of doing legwork for jerks.
