Of course I would love for these athletes to be paid because it’s clear they deserve it.

However, it is impossible to pay them with the current format of college football.

What is going to stop Nike from giving all the top recruits $2 million to sign with Oregon. Then it’s just about whose alumni can cough up the most money.

All in all, the college football we love is coming to an end.

Retards who buy into the tear jerker stories about how college athletes are exploited and are too low IQ to see the big picture

These same people also tend to be NBA fans

Actual rules don't stop them now.

And these donors are going to stop giving out that money willy nilly real quick once they get spurned by some dude who transfers after 1 season or a dude who just doesn't live up to the hype.

It will be interesting to see how this interacts with Title IX but I am all for the act if it means a new EA NCAA Football game.

People are buying the sob stories about how those poor college kids who get every meal, free education and private tutoring, clothes, stipend, etc. are somehow living in poverty.

God forbid they don’t have thousands of dollars in disposable income to spend on the latest clothes every month.

Tuition increase for other students to help fund these players

Students are already footing the bill when schools are upgrading athletic facilities. Smaller schools would increase tuition or cut other departments funding

If we are going to pay players, then we need to pay players.

Set a salary cap based on sport and division.

But I think you have to have some kind of entry allocation.

Right now, any HS player can sign with any school that will take him/her.

Maybe, for example in college football, every player that wishes to get paid needs to go through a draft system, or some other kind of limiting system.

All of these pay ideas are a lot like being pregnant. You can't be only a little bit pregnant. Either we do it - and modify the college experience as necessary - or we don't.

That would be an AWFUL investment. Why would anyone give a 17 year old kid that amount of money?

Girls will get endorsements also. The top softball players, gymnasts, volleyball players, runners will probably get paid to endorse sport related gear.

I agree 100%....and my school Ohio State is a school that would absolutely benefit from this! Schools that are in large metros and have huge alumni with deep pockets are going to distance themselves tremendously. Schools like Ohio State, USC, Texas are going to benefit astronomically from having large metros to market their players, plus they have huge alumni to line those pockets as well. This is going to create an out in the open arms race, of who can market and pay their players more. This will not be good for college football at all. The haves and the have nots are only going to get wider. Imagine trying to get a highly recruited player like Rondale Moore to go to Purdue (West Lafayette) in the future?? No chance things like that will happen in the future. If you love college football, why on earth would you support a major decision like this?

If OP is only talking about the new law passed in California, then the schools aren't paying the players. The new law just makes it illegal for the schools to prohibit a player from making money off his name/likeness. Basically allows college players to profit from their own endorsement deals. I'm not really a fan of it because it'll just make college football/basketball recruiting a bidding war between which school has the bag men willing to offer a recruit the most money. They wouldn't even have to try to hide it anymore...just have the player do a commercial or 2.

I agree with your post with the exception of the above statement.

They do NOT deserve it. Their value is almost 100% derived by their affiliation with the NCAA. If that were removed, their value plummets to close to zero.

nah

The threat of severe sanctions on the university is what "stops" it now. Obviously it doesn't completely stop it.

College football is great right now as it is. It will be the fans who are screwed in this deal.
