I thought Art would go to his grave before releasing Pujols.

Can’t see anyone taking him to allow him to reach 700 HRs unless they’re just a dreadful AL team with no shot and winning and nothing to lose.

Barring that, he done.

One of the best all around RH hitters in the game even if he did lie about his age. His STL run will never be forgotten.

One of the all-time greats for sure and for a period of 10-15 years was one of the most feared hitters in the game.

His fake birth certificate finally caught up to him.

I remember when he seemingly came out of nowhere in 2001 and supplanted a broken down McGwire at 1B for STL.

How does a release work on a contract like that?

They still owe him the full amount but don’t take a salary cap hit?

He played everywhere his first year it seemed, I recall him playing 3rd and OF. Allegedly the only reason he was on the opening day roster was because Bonilla was hurt.

Was he DFA or just released? Also was he out of options?

No salary cap in baseball. But I’m not exactly sure. No idea about the language in his contract. I’d assume if another team picks him up they’d be liable for some of his remaining contract but likely not all.

Unclear. Not many stories about it yet. He’s officially being released tomorrow. Most of what I heard came from the Mets/Cardinals broadcast today. I’d assume more info would come tomorrow.

2001 was crazy with 2 rookies in Pujols and Ichiro dominating.

Someone in the AL will pick Albert up if he still wants to play. Texas Rangers have nothing to lose, especially if Anaheim is on the hook for most of the salary.

One of the worst contracts in baseball history. I believe that was the contract that made teams be a lot more careful about spending freely on free agents in their early 30s*.

*Pujols was probably actually 35 when he signed that deal.

Had Pujols on my first fantasy baseball team that year. First waiver wire pickup ever.

I believe he was DFA

I have to imagine they had lengthy conversations about what to do and Pujols probably preferred this to being benched.

Honestly, he should have been cut years ago. Strange that they kept putting him out there everyday despite him being really bad.

Still one of THE faces of his generation

Pujols was so upset that he ran from the building to his car. As of last reports, he still hasn’t gotten there.
