There we go, Rickie.

A rickie win would be nice

The course looks amazing. It's fun to get majors once in a while at a course you basically never get to see.
They should have audibled during COVID when there were no crowds and tried to bribe Pine Valley into having a major.

Everybody pumping this course nads and it’s playing like a second-rate tour stop. The USGA cannot be happy.

They softened it up and cut the rough down too much. Far from “the toughest challenge in golf” so far. Hopefully it toughens up some.

These will be absolutely the slowest rounds ever, probably close to 6 hours.
Still half the time of the Pebble Beach Pro Am

It’s going to get harder as the days go by. Low scores in majors on Thursdays is nothing new.
It’d actually be nice if there is a US that its entire setup is solely to try and make players look stupid. I’d like to see some decent scoring.

Mother Nature softened the course up. It's been unusually cool and overcast much of the last two months after the really wet winter. The weather you are seeing on tv now has persisted for over a month and a half now.
Will be interesting to see how much harder the course gets over the next few days.

Your never going to get Shinnecock greens in L.A. in June when it's gloomy and cool every morning.
They are soft and likely to stay soft

I always root for Ricky (Mexican Leonardo DiCaprio), but he has a lot of good first rounds, before imploding. I hope he can put it all together just once.

He was top 5 in all 4 majors one year...

It was always going to be on the lower end of winning scores. It was obvious when most people didn’t want to predict a winning score and when they did it was upwards of -10.
Then it was sprinkling this morning, no wind, and huge fairways.
I think one is doing a disservice to themselves to expect a brutal test and not just sit back and enjoy the course and shots they’re hitting. And I think this place sets up for a really entertaining Sunday which I’m looking forward to.

I know there’s all this talk about the low scoring, but there are only 18 guys under par right now. For a first round, that’s not too far off the norm.
For reference after the 1st round last year, 25 guys were under par with -4 leading. Only 9 finished under par for the tournament with -6 winning.

I remember that weekend being difficult and a ton of fun.
-6 is a fine score imo. -3 seems perfect.

That said, Young Rickie is out here playing like he’s at the Bob Hope. 9 birdies and 2 bogeys.
