Anybody watched thus far?

1A 6-Man Division 1: Sterling City 68, May 22
1A 6-Man Division 2: Balmorhea v Richland Springs PPD
2A Division 1: Shiner 42, Post 20
2A Division 2: Windthorst 22, Mart 21
3A Division 1: Tuscola Jim Ned 29, Hallettsville 28 (OT)
3A Division 2 : Canadian 35, Franklin 34
4A Division 1: Argyle 49, Lindale 21
4A Division 2: Carthage 70, Gilmer 14

Some excellent games thus far.

Sterling City beats May for the second time this season.

Shiner doesn’t just make great beer. The Comanches ride the Brooks brothers to a dominant title win. Post loses in the finale for the second straight year. This is Shiner’s 3rd state title.

Windthorst notches their 3rd ever title win by knocking off 3-time defending champ Mart. Windthorst was a huge underdog, and scored a TD with 30 seconds to go to make it 21-20. The PAT was missed but Mart was flagged for being offsides. The Trojans gambled and went for two and converted to seal the win.

Panhandle powerhouse Canadian wins their 5th title in dramatic fashion. The teams traded multiple TDs in the final quarter. Franklin used a HB pass to score the go ahead points with a minute to go. The PAT miss left it at 34-28. Canadian QB Josh Culwell completed a 52-yard TD strike with 28 seconds, and the extra point delivered the win.

Jim Ned and Hallettsville met in the night cap, neither having won a title. Hallettsville rolled to a 21-0 lead. Jim Ned rallied to tie late and send in to OT. After UT-commit Jonathon Brooks rambled in for. Hallettsville TD, Jim Ned responded, nutted up and went for 2 and the win, and converted.

Not a state title game because it’s 6a but Bridgeland won a thriller tonight. 4OT game.

the third OT Bridgeland was up by 3 and Dekaney had the ball first and goal from the one. Defense made an amazing stand to force a FG.

Dekaney also tried some shady arse shite at the end of regulation. They were tied and kicking a FG togo up but they faked it and got a TD. But the refs called for some penalty I've never heard of. Can't remember what it's called. Dekaney had like 5 guys running off the field and snuck one back on at the sideline. That was the person that caught the pass.

The Bridgeland QB is an absolute baller though. Had 5 passing tds and 2 rushing. Probably 400 yards passing. He’s a junior with offers from UT, OU, UF, AU. He’s an even better baseball player.

Dylan Geoffney had a monster game as well. Scored 3 tds including the winner. And made a circus catch on the sideline. He'll be a good one for smu.

All rural teams these days. No longer Austin, Dallas, Houston or San Antonio ISD’s like you would see 15-20 years ago. It’s all about suburban and rural schools nowadays.

Yep. Typical for lower classifications I think though.

The 4A game tomorrow are 3 East Texas teams and one DFW area team.

I’ll be at Rockwall v Desoto tomorrow night.

The three one point games were all great. Wild stuff in each with missed xps, trick plays and in that last game, the best player on the field gets beat for the 2 pt play because he thought the play would be blown dead due to offsides.

That’s how it always is in the lower classes. You MIGHT see some older inner-city schools make a run in 4A, but those are schools that have long been passed in the pecking order.

When 5A and 6A titles roll around, it’ll be all about Houston and Dallas metro. SA area grew too fast for its own good. The amount of new schools popping up there is insane. That has neutered Judson, Steele, and Brennan. I’d expect to see Westlake make noise again and represent the Austin area.

Yep. Lots of familiar blood in these games. Mart and Canadian have been mainstays also. I feel like it’s the same in 2A region IV where the survivor of Mason/Refugio/Shiner will take state.

That’ll be star studded.

My choices this weekend are limited to Harlingen v SA Stevens and SA Brennan v Edinburg Vela. I could maybe see Brennan making a run to the semis.

I thought the same thing when I saw the matchup, but discovered they have never met in the title game.

They’ve combined for 11 championship game appearance in the last 13 years. Both won titles in 2009, but in separate divisions. Otherwise, it’s one or the other, never both in the same year.

Also, I didn’t realize how many titles Carthage has racked up recently. They’ve won 7 since 2008, and will most likely win their 8th tomorrow. That will tie them for second most in Texas. Aledo just won their 9th last year to pull away from Katy, Celina, and Southlake, and Mart. .

Karen Wagner HS being built definitely hurt Judson HS.

My kids go to Smithson Valley. They play Westlake tonight.

Smithson Valley is about to get ripped apart, too. They are building a new high school, Pieper Ranch, on the west side of 281. It opens next year. They are starting out with 9th and 10th graders only. What sucks is they haven't released the revised district school lines so I may have one son at SV and another at PR.

They don’t make exceptions for siblings? They did that when Bridgeland opened up and kids had brothers/sisters still at Cy Ranch

I would've lost a lot of money betting against that fact. but IIRC Gilmer has been slowly climbing the classification board while Carthage has been 4A for a long time

From what we've been told, no. My wife even works at Smithson Valley Middle School and she was told that won't matter either.

We live on the east side of 281 so we're hoping that will keep us in SV's zone, but Pieper Ranch will be closer to our house. One positive note is my daughter is zoned for SVMS even though Pieper Ranch Middle School is already open.

Another thing that sucks is my 14 year old is the only Freshman in his ROTC program to make the varsity marksmanship team. If he has to switch schools next year we've heard they aren't going to have a ROTC program yet.

It’s another area building up fast. I remember when SV was a smaller class school out in the sticks. That program peaked in the 2000’s. They beat up on us in the third round of the ‘02 playoffs. I think that was the year they played Southlake Carroll in the state title.
