Philadelphia Eagles expected to trade QB Carson Wentz soon, sources say

The Philadelphia Eagles are expected to trade Carson Wentz in the coming days in what would be the latest blockbuster quarterback deal to rock the NFL, league sources tell ESPN

Sources say that teams have begun calling the Eagles on their former starter Wentz, plotting a roadmap for a potential trade as teams get closer to the start of the league year.

The Eagles are not in a hurry to trade Wentz -- and in fact as of now intend for him to return for 2021 under new coach Nick Sirianni -- but they did field the calls and discussed the issue. GM Howie Roseman will almost always listen, and this is no different.

While Stafford went to the Rams (in principle) in exchange for two future first-round picks, a third-rounder and Jared Goff?, it's unclear what the price would be for Wentz. But it would have to be enough to make it worth it for the Eagles to trade someone who would otherwise factor heavily into their starting QB conversation.

quote:

Wentz signed a four-year, $128 million extension in June of 2019, and because of the way it's structured, a release is nearly impossible. But a trade before his $10 million roster bonus is due on March 19 would give the Eagles a more manageable dead money charge of $33.8 million, while a new team would take on $25.4 million in salary -- and a four-year, $98.4 million existing contract.

Asked if Wentz will be on the roster in 2021, Sirianni said: "I can't answer that."

As of 30 mins ago the #Bears have the top offer out for Carson Wentz. Unless another team comes over the top Wentz will be headed to Chicago. Bigger offer than most have expected. Bidding war will do that.

Who would trade for such a mediocre qb at such a rediculous salary?

Bears seem dumb enough to do it

I’d take the gamble.

Imagine Wentz on the Bears or say the Colts. I think those are playoff contending teams

His contract isn’t nearly as high as Watson’s and they are effectively the same QB. Plus he can be had for a lot less draft capital.

Effectively the same?

Carson Wentz was sacked more than any qb in the league last year. Have you ever seen Deshaun Watson play football?

Colts I could agree.

The Bears may have less weapons than the Eagles. They got Robinson and a whole lotta nothing.

Every single starter on that offensive line missed games last season.

I’ve seen him go 28-25 with one playoff win.

Wentz is below .500 as a starter with 0 playoff wins on a team good enough to win a super bowl with Nick Foles

On arguably the worst run team in the NFL who was actively taking away his weapons.

Watson is 95% as good as Russell Wilson IMO, and better than the one trick pony in Baltimore. There is no QB, who could be had now, that I'd rather see play for the Saints in the new era in NOLA.

Hell no. Carolina is not dumb enough to make that trade.

I'd agree with you if the old management were still in place.

The new management seems reckless enough to do it.

No they haven’t

This is 100% planted to “sources” by the Eagles.

Sheeit. The Eagles would have to throw in a 1st like the Rams just to get the other team to take on Weintz’s salary. In a vacuum—or if he were a free agent—I’m sure a team like the Colts or Saints with good rosters and HCs that work well with QBs would have a curious interest in him, but nobody is burning the Eagles’ phones up wanting to take that contract AND give up assets for him. It’s a weird QB market, but if the Eagles are ready to move on from Wentz (and let’s be real, they are—that’s why this story exists), if offered, they should take a 2nd or 3rd rounder and dance a jig.
