Hall of Famer 'Sugar' Shane Mosley has faced a who's who of fighters in the span of his career.

Two fighters that he faced in particular were Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

In his option, Mosley believes De La Hoya - in his prime - was a better fighter than Mayweather.

Mayweather won a close twelve round split decision over De La Hoya in 2007. Mayweather was in the prime of his career and De La Hoya retired from the boxing one year later.

“In his prime, definitely I would say Oscar was better,” Mosley said to Yahoo Sports. “He was more physical and faster, and he had more punching power.”

I remember ordering that dumb fight. De La Hoya beat Mayweather. He pressed the action the whole fight. All Mayweather did was counter punch and run, then run some more. The aggressor should get the benefit, unless he is hurt, knocked down or out. I think De La Hoya threw over 100 punches more and was always moving forward. I just didn't get it..

This. I haven’t ordered a fight since that horrible decision.

Agressive doesn't mean shite if you don't land.

quote:

Ringside punching stats favored Mayweather heavily, crediting him with landing 207 of 481 punches to 122 of 587 for De La Hoya. Mayweather also landed more power punches than De La Hoya, outscoring him 138-82.

That is just BS. Of course it means something. You put yourself in danger being the aggressor and moving forward. Its easier to sit back, dodge and counter punch. It wasn't like De La Hoya wasn't throwing punches, he threw way more.

If you read the breakdown, the fight should have been scored, at best, as a draw.

"The final minute of the final round was the only time where the fighters really went toe-to-toe in the center of the ring for extended exchanges, throwing everything they had left. Roth was the only judge to score the 12th round for Mayweather, and if he had gone the other way, his card would have been 114-114. That would have made the bout a draw."

Looks like Mosley might have taken too many punches to the head.

No way De La Hoya is anywhere close to Mayweather in pound for pound talks.

There's merit to that. What judges look for is "effective aggression" meaning landing as the fighter is forcing the action. Missing jabs and swinging for the hills while missing is not effective aggression.

Mayweather is a tremendous athlete that’s made a career out of outlasting his opponents while not taking any chances. He is Iceman of boxing. “Ice cold, no mistakes. Smooth, methodical until you do something stupid and then he’s got you.”

That doesn’t mean he’s the GOAT. He’s dominated boxing during an era where top flight talent is extraordinarily thin.

Let the downvotes begin.

No argument from me. He would not have fared well in the era of Duran, Sugar Ray Leonard, Tommy Hearns and company. Any one of those 3 would have likely stopped him.

Of course all of them were much bigger than Mayweather too....And they all would have beaten De La Hoya as well.

Mayweather is without a doubt between them and De La Hoya in all time P4P lists. De La Hoya isn't even that high on most all time P4P lists... barely making top 40 or 50.

Mosely is only saying this because he beat De La Hoya twice.

Still better than De La Hoya though.

No

Mayweather won

Oscar fists hit his gloves more than anything

This being said if Oscar faced him 2-3 years prior; Oscar would have won

There’s a reason boxing is known as the sweet science

It’s to hit and not get hit

Aaron Pryor was better than all of em...just got too messed up on drugs and had some terrible timing when fights against Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard were cancelled due to injury or contract negotiations.
