A little before my time. Thought I knew my Louisiana basketball history until someone mentioned Dwayne Bryant. He’s coaching Bishop Ireton from Alexander, Virginia. Played at De La Salle in New Orleans from 1983-1986 (High School All American). Was the MVP of the 1986 Sunkist Shootout. John Thompson recruited him to Georgetown to play with some kids named Alonzo Mourning and Dikembe Mutombo and Charles Smith. I always knew Mourning and Mutombo played together at Georgetown

They must be a IMG academy type school to be able to send their team down here for a week. Looked at their roster and they have a kid 6’9”,6’7”,6’6”. Newman seems to be the favorite. Crazy to think about all the talent that has come through here the last 40 years.

Anyone watched this kid play back in the 80’s? Why did every Louisiana basketball recruit leave the state? Louisiana had so much basketball talent and no one ever stayed back in the day.

results after Day 2

WOW! 40 years! That makes me feel real old. I am 99% certain I played in the inaugural tourney. I wasn't any good. 6' white guy who couldn't shoot. Only used in the 4th to get in and foul.

Still.....

This was my most favorite tournament to play in when I was in HS. Most points in a game by a single player record still holds from 1993. Was set against us. Dude shot a million free throws in that game.

If you were a D1 talent in the 80’s and 90’s why wouldn’t you leave the state? Louisiana basketball was arse.

I sat on the bench in five of them and did the PA for Ten more

Some great memories of that tournament

The kid from White Castle put on the best individual performance of anyone I saw in the Sunkist.
Wonder whatever happened to him?

Did he play for Hansen? The Mouton kid for STM was good that year.

Louisiana college basketball was much better in the 80s and 90s than it is today.

My memory is foggy but didn’t White Castle win the Sunkist one year? Beat STM in the Finals?

I can’t speak if Ireton is like an IMG school now, but it wasn’t twenty five plus years ago when I was attending high school in Northern VA. They weren’t even the best private school in Alexandria, both Episcopal and St Stephen’s/St. Agnes had better basketball teams. The DC metro area has always had fantastic HS basketball teams, both in the city as well as in MD and VA.

Fun fact 1… Dave Grohl went to BI for a bit.

Fun fact 2… BI is like a mile away from TC Williams, the school in which the Remember The Titans story is based upon.
