St Francis College (Brooklyn) who is in NEC (same conference as Fairleigh Dickinson) is dropping Athletics.
Low on cash. Blaming Pandemic. Curious if any other small schools drop out

Among these challenges are increased operating expenses, flattening revenue streams, and plateauing enrollment due in part to a shrinking pool of high school graduates in the aftermath of the pandemic.
Elimination of Athletics
The St. Francis College Board of Trustees and Leadership are responding to these challenges by acting decisively with plans in place to benefit the College and the students we serve. Accordingly, the Board of Trustees recently approved a strategic realignment plan which includes the elimination of the College’s NCAA Division I athletics program, effective at the conclusion of the Spring 2023 semester.
We want to acknowledge that SFC has a rich legacy in competitive athletics, and are proud of our Terriers today and in all years past. This difficult decision was guided by a commitment to preserving the College’s 164-year Franciscan mission to provide a high quality and affordable education to working-class and first-generation students.
To ensure that student-athletes can continue their studies at SFC uninterrupted, the College will honor all current academic and athletic scholarships, even though students will no longer be participating in athletics.
Employment for athletics staff and coaches will end at the conclusion of the Spring 2023 semester. The College will provide information, recommendations, and next-step guidance to help ease this transition. We thank everyone involved in our athletics program for their spirit, dedication, professionalism, and commitment to the College.

They have 2400 students I wonder what percentage are athletes.
Small schools usually don't discontinue athletics because they make up a big portion of the student pop

From what I understand, a lot of smaller colleges are going to start to disappearing over the next 10+ years as the US population ages (among other reasons). Here in Boston, a number of smaller schools have been absorbed by larger schools in the city for their land and programs. I’m sure Louisiana could trim a few public schools…
I don’t expect FBS programs to disappear, but I could absolutely see a ton of D1 basketball programs disappearing like St Francis.

Louisiana won’t be able to trim the schools they need to due to politics. If they trimmed the lowest performing schools based on stats alone, it would be a PR/political shite show.

Their dire financial situation likely predates the pandemic, and they should have transitioned to D-III or NAIA years ago.
Entire Division I programs don't blow themselves up just because things got more costly in the last two years.

Reddit says the school is moving to new campus. Old buildings/facilities are being sold.

No business being in D-1.
Why not drop down to D-3 or NAIA?

People are no longer able and willing to pay $50K a year to attend a small school with no real impressive features other than small classes.
Schools like Centenary, Millsaps, Spring Hill... it's going to be real interesting for them. Spring Hill has a $24M endowment.

Hartford went D-III because of this.

Yep. Less than two months after the Hartford men's basketball team reached its first NCAA tournament, the university's board of regents voted to transition the athletic programs from Division I to Division III.

Birmingham–Southern College was Divison I during the 2000s. School may not exist for much longer.

With pay to play and nil a lot of schools might get out of athletics business altogether
Sad but athletes will be the ones that suffer and all of this is being brought on by greedy players that don’t think an education is enough
