The best quarterback to come into the draft in nearly a decade, Lawrence will enter the NFL with the billing of a generational signal-caller, a keen sense of self and a burning desire to prove absolutely nothing.

quote:

He knows what is coming. He has known it for years. On April 29, Lawrence is widely expected to be the NFL’s No. 1 draft pick. As his father, Jeremy, says, “He is leaving the little world of Clemson,” heading to Jacksonville, entering a sports-media industrial complex that will inflate expectations and then chastise him for not meeting them, a warped world that rewards people with warped priorities.

The NFL is a league for the obsessive and the petty, so much so that fans can identify most star quarterbacks by their slights: 199th pick in the draft; passed over by his hometown 49ers; told he should switch to receiver even after he won the Heisman as a quarterback; drafted behind Mitchell Trubisky. This is the league of Bill Parcells’s saying, “This is not a game for the most well-adjusted people”; of Baker Mayfield’s taking offense when his old Browns coach, Hue Jackson, took another job after Jackson was fired; of defensive backs Richard Sherman and Darrelle Revis’s feuding long after Revis retired. And now it is the league of Trevor Lawrence’s saying, “It’s not like I need this for my life to be O.K.

“I want to do it because I want to be the best I can be. I want to maximize my potential. Who wouldn’t want to? You kind of waste it if you don’t.”

“It’s hard to explain that because I want people to know that I’m passionate about what I do and it’s really important to me, but . . . I don’t have this huge chip on my shoulder, that everyone’s out to get me and I’m trying to prove everybody wrong,” he says. “I just don’t have that. I can’t manufacture that. I don’t want to.” Marissa adds, “There’s also more in life than playing football.”

“Yeah,” Trevor says. “And I think people mistake that for being a competitor. . . . I think that’s unhealthy to a certain extent, just always thinking that you’ve got to prove somebody wrong, you’ve got to do more, you’ve got to be better.”

Trevor has always been like this. Everybody in the family says that off the football field, Marissa, who played soccer at Division II Anderson University, is more competitive than he is. His father says, “He’s not award-driven. He’s not, ‘I want to win a Super Bowl at all costs.’ ” Trevor’s coach at Cartersville High, Joey King, says, “There is no doubt about it: With who he is as a person, he could walk away from it tomorrow and be fine.” Others who know Lawrence well agree.

Clemson's offensive philosophy blows but nobody seems to talk about how he has been pretty average against great teams since his freshman year. Last year Tua was put through the ringer for the exact same thing

Lawrence has the physical traits and demonstrated on field ability to override potential concerns that he doesn't care enough about the game to be great. Fields doesn't quite have as much. So if he said the same thing the risk analysis would be a bit different. And it has NOTHING to do with skin color has this bozo seems to suggest.

Kyle Trask would be punished even more so that Fields for such statements because Trask doesn't have the physical traits, pedigree that Lawrence or even Fields has. Simple as that. The MORE talent you are perceived to have the greater the benefit of the doubt you get. The risk analysis for Lawrence is not quite the same as that for Fields. Just like the risk analysis for Fields would not be the same as a white 4th round QB prospect.

I know this may come as a shock to some, but not EVERYTHING is based on skin color

After seeing him in person in the natty, I turned to my brother-in-law and said, “this guy is supposed to be the next Andrew Luck?”

Just don’t see it. He will be good but will never meet the insane expectations.

Best QB in a decade stuff almost every year is so cringeworthy. I know Laurence is young and he has talent, but there is a wide chasm between Burrow and Laurence. Burrow actually knows how to play and think the position. Laurence might not be a top 3 qb in his draft class, let alone the best prospect in a decade.

So this is a take.

As for Shannon, he doesn't have a point that it's a race thing, as some white QBs got roasted for saying similar things, but he does have a point that the media anointed Lawrence halfway through his freshman year and will not say anything negative against him.

I don’t see the once in a generation billing that Lawrence has gotten. Seems like he performed well as a freshman and the hype followed him around after that.

All I'm going to say is I totally didn't get the hype Justin Herbert got before the draft and the man lit it up.

I don't see it with Lawrence, but let's see him play in the league.

The mental gymnastics that you guys perform on here to try to convince yourselves that TLaw is gonna be a bust is sad. The fact everyone is going to these lengths proves that you guys really don't believe that he's not worth the #1 pick. If you really believe that he's gonna be a "bust" or that he's not worth the #1 pick, well, you couldn't be my GM.

I shouldn't be surprised, though. This is the same board that has declared Mac Jones the next Brady and/or the Second Coming of Christ.
