Sports Illustrated - Concerns Growing About 2020 Season

This is from a Michigan writer but it's a good read.

However, over the last week I've had a number of conversations with faculty, coaches and athletic department officials that seriously have me questioning whether there will be football in the fall, or at the very least, anywhere close to what we've come to know football to be.
One coach I spoke to noted that in discussing the upcoming season with a former colleague in the SEC he was surprised to hear that a straw poll among the staff of that southern school had overwhelming expressed concern about moving forward with workouts and (soon-to-be) team practices.
quote:
There are very real discussions about playing a regional schedule if you can get away with it. One Big Ten school in the West Division supposedly has a tentative regional schedule in place, including, according to a source at that school, "multiple games against FCS schools."
Other Big Ten schools are thinking about scrapping the year altogether.
A number of sources contend there will be a few Big Ten schools that do not play football this fall. While there has been nothing officially released - in some part not to cause panic - Michigan (and other programs) are working behind the scenes to schedule Mid-American Conference and Conference USA opponents.
"It's going to be the wild, wild west pretty soon," one prominent coach said. "At some point, more schools will start announcing they will not play this season and we could be left with eight games on our schedule while Ohio State has 11 and Indiana has 10. The schools that decide to play football will be scrambling to fill games and you could see home-and-homes with conference opponents."
So why haven't schools announced yet? In the opinion of numerous sources it's two-fold: 1) it's July and they're waiting until the last-possible moment to make that call 2) no one wants to be first and incur the PR and recruiting hits.

I got down voted into oblivion when this first started in March.
Way too much "liability". Plus, with no spring ball and no summer camp (yet), there's no way you can get the kids ready to play by Sept. 1st.
Rip the band aid off already.

The decision makers at these schools are largely in the fear crowd and making life hell for us all crowd.
If there was a vaccine tomorrow it would still require shutdown for exactly the next 122 days.
No hope at all.

Don’t see college football happening. LSU gets to be champs another year.

All of this is to get OMB out of office - literally has the death rate of the flu

Who wants to watch these games anyways?
The atmosphere during the NBA playoffs and football season will be pitiful.
And the headaches that will come with idiots freaking out about positive tests won’t be worth it. Then players will look to take advantage of the situation and sue and all kinds of other issues.
I’m not sure I’m going to watch much football or basketball this fall. I could be wrong. We’ll see, I guess.

Team sports are going to be a freakshow and I doubt most actually happen. Golf and possibly tennis should be able to muddle through it.

It’ll be intriguing for 5 seconds.
Then it’ll feel like a USF spring game.

As more cases continue to rise and the death rate gets lower these officials at respective schools look like complete idiots.
This virus isn't going anywhere and we know objectively it doesn't effect 18-22 yr olds at all.
You cancel this season when will sports be back? If cases continue to rise even into next year but the death rate remains low everyone canceling schools will look like fricking idiots.
This virus is 100% completely political. There is no reason collegiate athletes can't play even in an empty arenas/stadiums.

They absolutely should play, but I want these spoiled arse athletes to lose their paychecks and scholarships so I’m fine without it for a year.

The roster sizes are the big problem for football. 100 players in college and 60 (including practice squads) in the NFL. Someone tests positive one day before the game and the whole team's contaminated and won't be in the clear for two weeks.

What are the symptoms keeping them from playing? I tested positive last week and haven't felt anything.. I'm 29.

They're worried about preventing transmission.
And the coaches and refs aren't young.

Tony Fauci thinks it’s gonna be bad in the cooler months, which would kill football season. He’s been right about the virus the whole time and believes everything he says. Gotta listen to the man.
