In reference to Machado and Harper not being signed a month out from spring training:

quote:

We are less then a month from the start of spring and once again some of our games biggest starts remain unsigned. Such a shame. It’s seems every day now someone is making up a new analytical tool to devalue players, especially free agents. As fans, why should “value” for your team even be a consideration? It’s not your money, it’s money that players have worked their whole lives to get to that level and be deserving of. Bottom line, fans should want the best players and product on the field for their team. And as players we need to stand strong for what we believe we are worth and continue to fight for the rights we have fought for time and time again.

Seems like a special kind of stupid.

Talk about out of touch with reality.

The rest of his post is fine, but that part is extra stupid.

yeah he's stupid. but I think the Dodgers are prepared to pay Harper $40 million a year they're balking at 10 year deal though. I don't blame them

Honestly, it is pretty surprising that 2 damn good players aren't signed. Longo's reasoning is stupid though.

More often than not, teams get totally screwed on these mega-deals and they're wising up. You're not going to keep seeing these 10-year $25-30M full no trade deals.

is it though? These players are trying to get contracts that teams have simply stopped giving. I have no problem with them trying to get what they can. But I also dont see why so many places are losing their minds over front offices acting a lot smarter now when people begged them to do so for years

I mean I understand it, they thought they would get the market from 2-3 years ago and it has shifted. They don't have as many teams in need and Harper is coming off an inconsistent tenure. They've both been offered 25 million (assuming) which is about right but not the 350-400 million they each thought before the season.

Not at the numbers they're looking to get.

There's a reason why owners are billionaires, and it's not because they grossly over pay for product, thus lowering their margins.

The thought of paying a player $400 million over a decade just blows my mind. I like to assume GMs are smarter than me, because they are, so when I see these guys not getting signed to contracts that would see them getting paid exorbitant salaries long after their play justifies it, the world makes sense.

Clearly they are. They’re worth whatever they get. Do you think they’re just paying them that much to be nice?

I thought this said Eva Longoria. Now I'm super pissed. No one cares about the opinion of some midget.

If I were the Astros I’d sure as hell give Harper a 3yr@$100m offer. Allowing him a big payday and a chance at another huge contract after the 3 year deal is up.

I honestly did too until I read your post and did a double take. I figured she was dating some player and decided to chime in.

So money from fans isn't the genesis of the payroll.

No, that’s magic money they get paid with.

Bryant from the cubs is crying on twitter as well about Harper and Machado not getting paid.

1. Nearly half the Clubs in MLB cannot afford a deal that big and length, it would be a killer in year 6-10 for them.

2. Not everyone wants to pay a 10 year deal

3. Neither is as good as Trout, who will command and get the deals they wished for.

He has a right to be pissed about how the Cubs fricked up his service time. Like every other young player in MLB.
