LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – New Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani has a damaged ulnar collateral ligament, according to a physical obtained by Yahoo Sports, and underwent a platelet-rich plasma shot in October in hopes of treating the elbow pain caused by it.

Ohtani, the 23-year-old right-handed pitcher and left-handed power hitter who signed with the Angels on Saturday after a frenzied recruiting process, has a first-degree sprain of his right UCL, according to a report dated Nov. 28 and performed by Dr. Masamitsu Tsuchiya at Doai Kinen Hospital in Tokyo.

While a first-degree sprain is the least severe of UCL injuries, further damage could lead to Tommy John surgery, a reconstructive procedure that sidelines pitchers for a year. The shot of PRP, a biologic of centrifuge-spun blood that is used to promote healing, was administered Oct. 20, according to the report, which was distributed to teams after Ohtani entered Major League Baseball’s posting system. Ohtani, the report said, “will be most likely available to start his throwing program approximately a month from the PRP.” Sports Illustrated first reported that Ohtani had received the PRP shot.

GMs everywhere are trying to look like it’s okay that they didn’t get him but deep down they know they’d want him regardless of ligament damage.

It's not torn and it doesn't sound like he needs Tommy John surgery yet. Even if he did, the investment is still worth it to the Angels. Seems like this was disclosed to every team according to the article.

Yeah assuming the date in that article is accurate then at least this won’t be of any surprise to the Angels

Still a massive bargain for them

I can assure you most high velocity pitchers have “damage” to their UCL. Is he symptomatic? That’s the real question.

His PRP injection was deemed as “strictly preventative”.

Angels stink now anyway. Just have the surgery now and forget about this season. That sucker is a ticking time bomb. Bite the bullet now instead of two or three years down the road when you may be in a pennant race.

I doubt he’s going to want to have it operated on unless there is no other alternative. He’s going to want to make an immediate impact.

I think they need more pitching to contend.

isn't that the same shite that Cardinals young hard thrower had, and it finally blew up?

You might as well just get the f'in tommy john surgery over with. still a while till season starts, and could he bat and dh while recovering???

His arm is a ticking time bomb, with no way to defuse it. It's going to blow up, why not get in front of it, rather than hocus pocus, bullshite.

they are getting richards back and have an entire offseason for ohtani to repair the ligament. shoemaker can be interesting as well

thats not a good pitching staff but one that i think can win over 85 games, which is wild card contention territory, with trout and upton in the middle of the lineup

I’m a little skeptical on him from from the hitting side of things. He struck out 1/3 of the time in the Japanese league.

ETA: he has a pretty swing though. Shades of Cody Bellinger.

Sounds like every team was aware of this when he was posted. Also note that it's a first degree sprain which is the least severe. He also has a "free body" in his elbow.

I still think he is an attention seeking whore
