Shaka smart emerging as leading candidate for Michigan job, mutual interest, will interview
quote:

Michigan did reach out to Billy Donovan, and though we don't have specifics as to how he said 'thanks, but no thanks,' we do know that he highly recommended someone else U-M is interested in:

Texas head coach Shaka Smart, who coached under Donovan at Florida for a year.

Yes, this is one rumor that actually has legs, and despite the fact that Texas fans don't like him, it would make a lot of sense and check a lot of boxes (and no, we are not offering an opinion on his coaching ability). He's an academic, family oriented guy. His wife is Harvard educated (we believe it's Harvard), he has midwest ties, having grown up in Wisconsin and played college ball in Pennsylvania.

U-M will reach out to him, and we believe he will interview. Texas fans are down on him, and while he loves Austin, he's open to the idea of moving on (we strongly believe).

quote:

The upside: he's a great recruiter. He's clean, cuts no corners. As one person told us, "He would get great talent to Michigan. Elite." UCLA reached out to him, and from what some told us he might have been interested had they been more interested and not made him one of 20 guys on a list.

Why the frick is billy Donovan recommending Shaka smart. Dude is one bad season away from getting fired.

I like Shaka more than most. He did very well at VCU. Texas...I'm beginning to think that is more about the admin than coach.

Makes sense for both sides. Michigan is in a bit of a bind because of the timing. Smart hasn’t lived up to lofty expectations at Texas and could be looking for a good escape plan to stay ahead of his resume.

It may not be the guy UM really wants, but it could be better than they could have expected this late in the game.

One thing is for sure. Texas Tech fans/admins are now freaking out and Chris Beard could be in line for a HUGE pay raise

Wow Shaka must be really clean and do things the right way for Michigan to consider him

I've said it again and again: his final four run was a fluke that masks an otherwise unimpressive resume.

Meh. Seems like a lateral move at best

He's probably another poor year away from getting fired, so I could see it.

I think you have to consider the fact that Michigan is a lot different than Texas when it comes to their basketball programs.

Could be a good hire.

Smart was a failure at Vcu outside of one fluke run

This, I would jump all over it if I were him. He won’t get an offer this good next year if he gets canned.

I don't know if I would say failure, but nothing he did really stands above his predecessors or successors. The final four run (in a year where people were arguing they shouldn't even have made the tournament) has certainly blinded people.

He will be at the back of the list of coaches the NCAA would go after, due to social impact reasons.

Both Shaka and Anthony Grant suck. Both former Florida assistants under Billy Donovan. People though Will Wade would suck because VCU coaches were apparently all shitty. Will Wade recruiting or not is a hell of a coach.

I did think Shaka was a bit of a one-hit wonder, but Michigan can't really do better right now. And I'm not sure they can do much better even if they went interim for a year, then restarted next year.

I would forget all pretense of ethics/morals and make a play for Pitino.
