Beat guys are just day to day reporters that cover the games and practices, etc.
Many of them aren't really info guys, they just do a lot of game recapping and previews.
How does a newspaper or publication with a large sports writing staff even keep these guys on the payroll for the time being.

Most papers are struggling to stay afloat prior to this, there are going to be wide reaching economic consequences to virtually everyone.

Every one of the sports journalist tweeting out all magnanimously about now canceling all the games is the right thing to do should not be paid until the games start back. They are paid to cover sports. No games, no pay.
I guarantee you their tone would change real quick.

When I initially enrolled in college, I wanted to be a sportswriter. I’m so grateful I realized early on what an absolute waste of a career that would have been. Most people I know who were in it spent a few years covering high school sports for peanuts before realizing that.

Could they report on Madden 2020 Football League sports? Or perhaps the local high school's Chess Tournament for Students?
