You always say this, how exactly would things be different? He was a jerk to his teammates, and he liked to gamble?? Oh noz People like Vick, Kobe, Big Ben, etc have flourished in the 'social media' era. I have no idea why some of you think MJs reputation would be hurt if he played in this era.

Vick was a major villain who redeemed himself

Kobe was a villain post-Colorado. he even kind of owned the persona

Big Ben isn't a major guy and isn't comparable to MJ

have you ever talked to random older (45-60) people who remember MJ? almost none know that he's a borderline psychotic person who is one of the biggest assholes in the history of American sports. this is what they think of MJ:

happy, go lucky, super hero. he's superman to them (all that's good in humanity) when he's really much more like batman (dark, jaded, etc)

Hot Take: LeGOAT James might be enjoying the greatest all-around season in the history of the NBA by a player not named Wilt and Kareem, in year 15 it's simply phenomenal

Wait, so you are comparing an 18 year old Lebron to a 21 year old Jordan

No. I was just averaging his first three years instead of his entire career to try and make it as "comparable" as possible. It is impossible to perfectly compare.

That's your experience. Most people I knew hated MJ, everyone was sick of them winning all the time. I have no idea how old you are, but everyone knew MJs off the court issues at the time. And many in the media went after him but he performed, that's all anyone cares about.

Accurate analogy, hell people like Skip Bayless use that borderline psychosis as a defense when explaining his greatness and all that in terms of superiority to other legends which is a complete joke, people don't obtain Wilt, Russell, Kareem, MJ, Kobe, Larry Legend, Hakeem and LeGOAT accomplishments and titles without being ultracompetitive, it's almost a presumed required attribute to succeed in high-level professional sports or high-level jobs in general.

Kobe tried to emulate that as a PR thing and it backfired on him

Lebron has bent over to NOT make that his persona. people have to really reach to criticize LBJ (at least pre-racial attack that's questionable at best) but he seems like a good dude in terms of major NBA players. having an entourage or fricking groupies isn't an indictment given the population he's a part of.

and to get back to the MJ persona, he got to be a terrible piece of shite and psycho like kobe but the press reported on him in terms favorable to what LBJ gets. that's the PR advantage MJ has (to go along with basically being the first real mega star from the NBA who basically became the single archetype for NBA mega stardom). Nike, the media, the NBA, etc basically created that role based on the reality and manufactured mythology of "MJ"

Agreed, he was arguably the first true athlete beneficiary of the cable TV era in terms of endorsements basically the moment he left UNC and played on the 84 Olympic team and it hasn't stopped since. The MJ mythology is arguably David Falk's magnum opus.

Yea that .1 net rating sure agrees with you. His team is damn near better when he is sitting on the bench.

Highest VORP in the NBA, 2nd highest BPM, most win shares, most offensive win shares, top 10 highest offensive rating, highest PER, 3rd in assist pct, 3rd in APG, 3rd in PPG, and his team is currently the 4th best team in the NBA STFU TROLL

I’m more of an “on” guy than “on/off”. Even “on” is VERY pedestrian.

What relevance does that have to do with anything? Lot of Finals to advance to regardless which is more than many players ALL-TIME can argue, and 3.

VORP. BPM. Win share. Etc. all influenced by games played. They are counting stats. He has played three more games than the clear mvp at this point. That’s why he is ahead in those.
