Damn, sorry to hear that.

ETA: Not much information, but "tethering to a construction boom" sounds pretty half-assed.

Jesus.

Prayers for the worker's family and best wishes to Baylor's construction project from here on out.

That's horrible.

It hasn't always made sense to me either, but on the industrial side of construction you are required to tie off to the man lift basket rather than anything else around you. I always think about what will happen if the boom collapse or the man lift turns over. You are dragged down with it.

The reason that this is required is that you are more likely to fall out of the basket than the other two options listed above. If you are tied off to the basket there is less chance for a swing injury if you fall out.

there always seem to be deaths during stadium construction... I know jerryworld at a couple... and milwaukee had the crane collapse building miller park.

Not sure if it's the speed of construction, or b/c these projects are more high profile. I work for a decent size GC, and I can't think of one fatality we've had on a job (at least since i've been here).

Agree with this.

I have some limited safety experience and on the surface without knowing the situation hooking up to a boom is a no no. But as anyone who works in any kind of construction knows. Often its not always that simple.

Not sure if its been clarified but the construction worker was working on a bridge that spans across the Brazos River and connects Baylor's campus to the stadium when it collapsed and brought him and another worker (who escaped) into the water.

WACO, Texas (Jan. 29, 2014) – Baylor University released the following statement today:

At approximately 3:56 p.m. yesterday, two employees of Derr and Isbell Construction working on the pedestrian bridge at McLane Stadium fell from a construction barge into the Brazos River. One of the workers was immediately taken to Providence Health Center in Waco where he was treated for hypothermia and later released. With the assistance of Morgan’s Point Dive Team from Belton, Texas and Texas Parks and Wildlife, Waco Police and Waco Fire Department initiated a recovery mission for the second worker and later located the body of Jose Dario Suarez who was pronounced dead at 8:17 p.m.

“Our thoughts go out to the Suarez family at this terribly sad hour,” said Baylor University President and Chancellor Ken Starr. “All of Baylor Nation extends our deepest sympathies as we remember in our prayers Jose Suarez and all those whom he loved.”
