The new Big 10 commissioner might be the former Big 10 commissioner before this is all over.

The commissioner is just doing what the school presidents told him to do.

Trying to save face in general. Bowing out when the other conferences are moving forward is a bad look...especially when Nebraska is fiercely and publicly fighting to play.

Ohio state isn’t gonna do anything. Their president voted in favor of postponment. Ryan day’s hands are tied.

I mean they voted to play on a SEC like schedule

Its gonna take more than 24 hours to figure out what to do knowing most of your conference doesn't give a frick.

Yep. And he knows OSU, which was on the verge of having one of the best recruiting classes, is getting pounded on the recruiting trail. He’s just trying the diffuse the situation as much as possible or keep kids from looking to transfer.

As others have said, he knows they won’t play this season. He’s trying to save his incredible recruiting class

It's got to be frustrating when 3 other P5 conferences have their shite together and your conference is losing it's mind over old information.

Chip Kelley was quoted saying he only just showed up to facilities so there was no realistic way they could pull the season off in time, yet most of the SEC has been back at the office for months.

That’s exactly what this is. Day has been on the no play train from the beginning. He’s just like my 4 month old pointer. Barks like hell from his cage, but open it up and all of a sudden he’s not about that lifestyle anymore.

Has the question been answered on if conference members can play outside their conference if their conference governing body cancels their season?

Seems there should be leeway there I would think. I don’t see how the BIG10 should be allowed to financially bankrupt it’s universities and college towns by choosing not to let them play.

I suspect what is happening is that many of the schools want to play, regardless of what the conference voted and would essentially be willing to go "independent" for a year. The major hold up is the TV contracts all conf. schools are locked into. But, the networks want programming. Particularly ESPN for whom college football is a BIG part of their revenue stream. If they could join up with one of the conferences playing (somewhat similar to what ND is doing) and somehow negotiate a new one year TV contract. One not with the conference as a party, but the school itself, then they want to explore this option.

The Big 10 would say absolutely not because they don't want their member schools independently negotiating TV deals (OSU, Mich, would command big sums while teams like Northwestern or Purdue would be SOL and unable to benefit from OSU's wide appeal. It would effectively blow up the conference). Then again, we've never had the conference tell its member schools they can't play and thus, have to eat the huge revenue loss that comes with it.

How ironic the Big 10 waits until students to arrive on campus before shutting down football. Absolutely pathetic and wrong.

If the big10 has a tv contract. But doesn’t fulfill it. Who’s in the wrong? Big10 chose to kill that deal. Not OSU or Neb.

Contracts are not one sided
Big ten brings the games. ESPN/abc brings the media production. Seems like by choosing no football they are already probably in noncompliance

I will be shocked if anyone plays in the spring. It’s all just fan service. If this is about player safety then how can u ask the same players to play 2 seasons in a calendar year?

Jim Delaney told the presidents what to do.

New guy doesn't have that power/stroke.

I mean, the owners are supposed to tell Roger what to do, but we see how that works.

I really don't know how much teeth the Big 10 has with this.

If LSU starts an Ice Hockey team, the SEC doesn't have that. I'm going to assume that the SEC has zero grounds to penalize LSU for joining a different conference, for THAT sport.

The Big Ten is NOT sanctioning fall football this year... but several other conferences ARE. So really, it's not competing against them.
