Russia has been handed a four-year ban from all major sporting events by the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada).

It means the Russia flag and anthem will not be allowed at events such as the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics and football's 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

But athletes who can prove they are untainted by the doping scandal will be able to compete under a neutral flag.

It comes after Russia's Anti Doping Agency (Rusada) was declared non-compliant for manipulating laboratory data handed over to investigators in January 2019.

It had to hand over data to Wada as a condition of its controversial reinstatement in 2018 after a three-year suspension for its vast state-sponsored doping scandal.

Wada says Rusada has 21 days to appeal against the ban. If it does so, the appeal will be referred to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas).

Entirely politically motivated bs. Other countries are as lax or worse than Russia and don't have to deal with this

Maybe, but no one else has a state run doping program like Russia does.

Honestly curious what other countries are doing this under the radar?

The substance that Maria Sharapova, for example, was punished for using was completely innocuous. Meanwhile the US gets away with *female* athletes juiced the frick up like this. I don't like Putin or the Russian govt, but this is obviously a case of the Western countries punishing them. If it wasn't, why aren't other former Former Soviet/Eastern bloc countries getting hit with penalties?

You are either a moron or a paid shill.

The stuff Russia did in Sochi is unprecedented. They were literally creating side doors for their testers to take out the dirty blood or urine of the athletes they knew were dirty and replacing it with clean samples.

There is an award winning documentary called Icarus on Netflix that goes into the detail of state sanctioned doping as well as all of the cover-ups ordered from the very top.

Any non-RT article will tell you that this goes far and above what anyone has done in the post Cold War era.

Banned from the 2022 World Cup. Good. They bribed their way to hosting the 2018 World Cup.

Yeah I gotta say the push back in this thread is really surprising and a little concerning

In track and field, until recently, the out of competition testing for Jamaica and Kenya was very haphazard. Athletes could pretty much be confident that in the off-season they could do whatever they wanted and would be unbothered. Then they would clean up in the weeks before the Diamond League. And the dirtiest athletes would just skip everything and get clean for the Worlds.

Testing has apparently caught up recently in those two countries while the new criticism is that Ethiopia is the country lagging behind.

Of course there is a huge difference between testing centers being underfunded in Ethiopia, Kenya, Jamaica, etc and the state-employed testers working with officials to sabotage dirty results by replacing samples.

It’s one guy who I have never seen around here. And we know how much Russia likes to get into social media and obfuscate and change discussions.

If this was Reddit or the Deadspin comments section (RIP), I wouldn’t even have the first option up.

Again, all the former Soviet and eastern bloc countries have strong histories of doping. Testing is non-existent in places like Jamaica. China was notorious for this as well, and i seriously doubt that they have changed. As I've said, I think Putin and the Russian govt is shite, but this is politically motivated to a huge extent. Also fricking lol at Russia being interested in tigerdroppings.com

They'll still make the World Cup.

Just not under the Russian Flag.
It will be like the last Olympics.

I don’t think there is any evidence to support that claim.

And for the record, the ban was not because isolated athletes were doping. It was because the large-scale doping was coordinated by russian officials, who were systematically skewing, altering, and deleting positive tests. It’s one thing to cheat in isolation. But a wide spread, coordinated effort to systematically cheat and then to lie about cheating is just throwing a whole bunch of fuel on the fire. Dumbass rooskies were begging for this ban.

Other countries have individuals that cheat, but Russia’s cheating is state-sanctioned. And they tried to cover it up.

How is it that the countries run their own testing? There should be some sort of 3rd party or every country has their own testing team but they test another country, I don't know.
