Roy Jones Jr: Mayweather is not TBE, he doesn't come close to matching me at my best
quote:

Jones believes, with confidence, that he entertained the crowd like nobody else ever did.

“The great thing today is it don’t matter what anyone says or what anyone writes, you can type 'sickest boxing highlights' into YouTube or Google and you see Roy Jones Junior doing this thing. Nobody can change your mind after you see that. That is pound-for-pound! I did what I did – it happened – it is a fact," Jones said.

“Nobody else comes close. You can watch me side-by-side with anyone and it’s not close."

But Mayweather considers himself to be TBE (The Best Ever) - which Jones disagrees with.

He admits Mayweather made far more money, but never came close to his "prime" skills and performances.

Mayweather was a former five division champion, with world titles at junior middleweight, welterweight, junior welterweight, lightweight and super featherweight.

“Floyd Mayweather was TBE at making money, but look at his highlights and look at mine. You can’t pretend it’s the same. You can’t pretend there’s ever been anyone come close to doing what I did. Nobody you could name could touch me - and I’m talking about nobody who’s around now, nobody who was around in my prime, and nobody who was around any time you can mention outta your mouth," Jones said.

“In my prime, I was the ruler. Simple as that. I understand there’s a lot of great fighters who’ve followed me already since I was the champ - and I hope there’s another who comes along does even better because want to see that - but I haven’t seen anyone do what I did yet. I haven’t seen anyone turn pro at 154lbs and win the heavyweight championship of the world.

“Even the great Sugar Ray Robinson, the pound-for-pound guy that he was, couldn’t win the light heavyweight title after turning pro as a welterweight. He had a difficult time trying that. So that tells you how hard it is to jump up that kind of weight and win. So, pound-for-pound the greatest of all time? It isn’t hard to figure out, Roy Jones Junior is your king of the hill.”

I don’t think even the most ardent Mayweather supporter will claim he was a great entertainer as a fighter.

RJJ is right. I don't think any fighter at their peak was as good as RJJ.

But longevity matters and once RJJ's natural talent began declining, he dropped like a rock because he never developed skills to rely on like other fighters that last do.

Just like Mike Tyson, it's the curse of the gifted. Older fighters have to rely on guile to set traps, confuse opponents, which RJJ never concentrated on developing because he was so naturally gifted.

He dropped because he went WAY up in weight as well as got old/slower.

This. But, it really depends on the definition of "GOAT" that is used. There are so many examples of folks who dominate in a flash, but there has to be something for the longevity of the ones who figure out more than pure talent.

Let them all talk and entertain us all before we bash any of them. Without their contributions, none of us would be having this debate.

The older/slower thing was my point. That happens to everyone but those that master the craft of boxing can slow that decline by developing skills that don't require peak athleticism.

If you've always been able to just flat out be better than everyone through reflexes and hand speed then when those talents erode you have nothing. But when he was at his peak he had zero competition, which means a lot.

I count longevity in the GOAT conversation and he takes a hit there.

He won his first title in 1992 and didn't really lose until 2004. Is that not a long time?

Can you imagine being hit that full flushed from RJJ..you would just wake up in the middle of the ring "Did I win?"

Who were the greats roy beat? I remember his spectacle of playing a really shitty minor league hoops game and beating a tomato can in the same day... calling it a title fight.

Two things I learned as a result of this thread:
1) RJJ is still fighting. Won last night in unanimous decision.
2) RJJ is the vocals on “Can’t be Touched”.

RJJ not winning the gold in the 1988 Seoul Olympics, after he destroyed the South Korean in the final, is one of the biggest screwjobs in Olympic history.
