"I’m not a very patriotic guy," McIlroy said. "I am doing it because I think it is the right thing to do, and I missed it last time. For golf to be an Olympic sport you need your best players there and I want to represent the game of golf more than anything else."

I give him a pass for the reasons cited in the article about the blurred lines with Northern Ireland.

I thought he explained it very well myself.

McIlroy can't really win in this situation. If he says he's a proud Irishman, then he pisses off the Brits.

If he says he's a proud member of the UK, he pisses off all the Irishmen.

I don't know how familiar most people still are with "The Troubles", but the sentiment is still simmering under the surface and almost ready to boil again.

Can you explain to me how Northern Ireland isn’t real? Is there not a northern section of the island or Ireland?

It's well noted that Rory wants no part of that situation. Matter of fact, awhile back, there were rumblings of him getting his Citizenship status here, in the States.

And in Rory's case in particular, he had an uncle who was murdered for being a Catholic in the wrong part of Belfast. He's been walking this line gingerly his entire professional life, and as you said, he cannot win.

He lives here in the states. It's amazing how many athletes represent a non-US country in international competitions yet live in the US (Naomi Osaka being one example).

McIlroy is essentially an American and has always wanted to live here and ay on the PGA tour. That was his dream.

I'm sure it doesn't help that he has to tap dance around his nationality in any public situation. If he gets US citizenship, he kind of voids all discussion of N Ireland after that

He might be woke and have some bad opinions (opinions his sponsors probably told him to have). But why is he filth?

For PGA players especially, they’re going to live in the states because this is where the majority of tournaments are, and the weather for practice purposes is significantly better (he can practice year round in Florida).

Just because you move to a country, doesn’t mean you get rid of your citizenship. There are Americans living all over the world, but if they’re the best athletes in the world it doesn’t make sense for them to move elsewhere.

Rory should just go ahead and become an American.
