Just heard on the radio that Sir Roger Bannister, first man to break the four-minute barrier in the mile run, passed away Saturday at age 88.

The man is greater sporting legend than near anyone ever, yet barely anyone on American television or anyone under 60 seems to acknowledge his acomplishments today... Case in point, this thread, which has virtually no responses.
Bannister breaking the 4 min mile is akin to the X-1 and Yeager breaking the sound barrier, or man landing on the moon... Feats all deemed impossible or life threatening in their day.
In a century that saw the likes of Ruth, Jordan, Nicklaus, Pele, Louis, Ali, and Secretariat, Bannister's accomplishment is on par with all.

Plus, the man had a long, distinguished career as a doctor. Most athletes' lives have no second act.

Greatness. It was a windy day when he broke 4 minutes and he was already working as a doctor and didn't train much at all.

No woman has yet run a four-minute mile.
Just saying. For the Serena vs. Mac crowd.
In fact the women's record held by a ahem..."Russian athlete from the 90's is 4 minutes and 13 seconds."
RIP Roger...you broke the sound barrier. The 4 minute was more mental than physical. People thought it could never be broken.

In fact, as soon as Roger broke it, it was broken a couple of more times within a few months by others.
There was this mental barrier that once he proved it could be done, it was then done over and over.
