Rob Manfred: MLB would like to expand to 32 teams and six cities are being considered

The league, which last expanded in 1998, has some tidying up to do, but for Commissioner Rob Manfred, he envisions a team in the Pacific and Eastern time zones. “Baseball is a growth industry,” Manfred said. “Eventually, we’d like to get to 32 teams.”
There are some good reasons for Manfred’s view on growth. MLB now sees gross revenues in excess of $10 billion, and with two new clubs the owners would likely garner $2 billion or more in expansion fees, not to mention new media rights revenues. With expansion would come regional realignment, and by then the universal DH would either be added or already implemented, given the union’s desire to bring the designated hitter to the National League.
As noted, baseball has some tidying up to do. For going on two decades, MLB has wanted the Oakland Athletics and Tampa Bay Rays to wrap up new ballparks, where the expectation is attendance and revenues would increase. And while the specter of relocation is always hanging over the two franchises, Manfred has made it clear to me and others that the focus is on keeping the A’s and Rays in their markets. Until then, expansion is on the league’s mind, but not at the forefront. “While we encourage markets to look into positioning themselves for the possible opportunity to host an MLB club, we aren’t discussing expansion at this time,” Manfred said.
Still, the conversation continues to percolate. In July 2018, Manfred said on FS1’s First Things First, “Portland, Las Vegas, Charlotte, Nashville in the United States, certainly Montreal, maybe Vancouver, in Canada” could be potential expansion markets. “We think there’s places in Mexico we could go over the long haul.”

Personally not a fan of the idea. I don’t think there’s enough talent in baseball to support 32 teams and I believe Portland is the only city on that list capable of supporting a MLB team. It would more preferable to see the A’s or Rays move to one of those cities than it is to expand to 32.

Idiot. Less teams. Not more. Half the teams aren't even trying to win as it is.

How many of the teams are actually filling a majority of their seats?
I could see Nashville doing well also though.

I’ll take more MLB teams if you take them from the NBA. Get with Silver and trade like the Hawks, Kings, Suns, and Grizzlies for MLB cities of your choice

I would much rather move the A’s to Portland and the Rays to Nashville or Charlotte and not expand

This guy will kill baseball in a way Selig never imagined. There are already too many fricking teams, making the regular season even more of a bore given the shite put out by organizations like the Marlins.
Eject the following teams and redistribute:
Marlins
Orioles
Mariners
Have an NL and AL again. No more divisions. Cut the season to 140.

Did everyone just consider Las Vegas a possibly for teams like 4 years ago? Seems every league has to go there now

Nashville is going to clean up in any expansion talk. Outside of Atlanta, everything in the vicinity sucks and won't be a threat to them getting a team, unlike say, Austin which has 3 big metros around it.
I wonder if some day the Grizz will be moved there to consolidate everything.

They would need to expand the wild card and well they should probably do that anyway.

you could not be more wrong! There is plenty of available talent. In addition to US talent, there are more international players in the system than ever before.

Vegas is a pretty sizeable metro and the reason it came on everyone's radar is because the national economy recovered. If you went to Vegas from about 2009-2012 it looked like shite and was in bad shape. Houses being sold for nothing. Being so focused on a discretionary income economy, I'm curious what will happen during another downturn.

The A’s and Rays each need new smaller ballparks in the 25-30,000 capacity range.
Of the choices listed, this is the order they should go in for expansion:
Charlotte
Nashville
Vegas
Portland
Vancouver
Montreal

Fan of the Marlins by chance? A team that’s been in existence for 26 seasons and had a losing record for 20 of them?
Or the 40 seasons of Mariner baseball with 28 losing seasons?
Trash teams.
Is it the NL/AL thing? Maybe if teams really had to fight for the playoffs with fewer games, games would be more competitive.
I love baseball but it’s dying at the major league level. Too many games and too many shitty teams are easy fixes.

I’ve been to Mariners and Rays home games. My anecdotal evidence is that Seattle is much more supportive and their stadium was 70% filled on a weeknight against the Rangers
TB vs Baltimore had less fans than LSU/McNeese
Get the Rays into Downtown TB or move them the hell out
