re: Resting and getting healthy for playoffs is slowly killing regular season sports
What really killed regular season sports was the wokeness

They can deal with the consequences

With this new NBA format, 20 teams out of 30 are in the postseason. That's just stupid.

While true, it's an improvement over the previous system. There's a much bigger advantage to finishing 6th instead of 7th.

The answer is making the regular season shorter. It’s going the opposite direction

Ownership doesn't want to give up home games. Money.

Starting position players are rested constantly. Cal Ripken’s streak is the safest record in sports.

With Yordan Alvarez already out with illness, Dusty Baker rested two other starters in a game a few weeks ago. Two nights ago, Joe Maddon rested three starters. Anything can happen in baseball, but statistically speaking, it’s as close to conceding the game as it gets and is a complete ripoff to people who pay quite a bit of money to attend in person.

The seasons will never get shorter by choice. That means less money for owners and players. Will never happen.

It's actually really stupid. At that point you may as well go the soccer route and make the regular season the playoff.

This is the answer.

American sports love to promote playoffs at the expense of regular seasons, which is baffling.

The team who goes 110-52 is better than the team who goes 85-77 and wins the WC, no matter what happens in a 5 game series.

The team who goes 14-2 is better than the 9-7 team who won a shitty division but gets hot at the right time. Doesn’t matter what happens in one game.

European soccer does it much much better.

There's nothing "free" about it. There's a trillion dollar plus info-tainment industry actively pumping celebrity hot takes into every discussion of every topic under the sun. and he's actually relevant to this discussion - on a sports message board.

Bet he really appreciates you his white knights.

get rid of playoffs entirely. 100, 50, hell even 25 years ago travel was such a prohibitively expensive venture. it made sense in a country this large geographically to insert divisions/conferences etc etc. but aside from football, it doesn’t make sense to me that we can’t just adopt the play everyone home and home and the team with the most points is the champ.

Europe got this one right, but unintentionally

he NHL Has ZERO problem with player effort throughout the season. Those guys play hard for 82 games. They're just different than the other big 3 sports. They take it to an ungodly level for the playoffs too.

Hockey is like baseball in that there are plenty of traditions and unwritten rules. Load management in hockey would not be tolerated by people even on the same team.

Those guys grit out stuff that NBA players would sit multiple games for and are right back out on the ice.

re: Resting and getting healthy for playoffs is slowly killing regular season sports
To add to my point. I remember right after the 2015-2016 Stanley Cup Finals when the Lightning lost it was revealed that Tyler Johnson was playing with a broken wrist. Ben Bishop, the goalie, was playing with a torn groin... now how does someone who is expected to be able to do the splits play with a torn groin?

It's almost always listed as an upper-body injury or lower-body injury in hockey, especially during the playoffs.

You really chose one of the most non-injured player in the NBA for that? i could see if you used anthony davis or 90% of the league other than lebron

There are 12 games in CFB. Even if you have a giant playoff field, there are not enough games to just go on a 2-3 game slide without absolutely ruining your seed or sending you out of the field.

All pro sports have been known to rest players for the playoffs.

Perhaps the stupidest of all time was in 2009 and Peyton Manning and the Colts were playing for a perfect season. Instead, the president and the HC decided to sit Manning and other key players and they proceeded to lose the last game of the season to the JETS. Jeff Saturday and a number of Colt's players never forgave those idiots.
