The University of Southern Mississippi released a statement Wednesday after former Baylor head football coach Art Briles was on campus Monday, interviewing for a position on the Southern Miss football coaching staff. According to the Sun Herald, Briles interviewed for the team's vacant offensive coordinator position. USM informed Briles he is no longer a candidate for the position, Southern Miss President Rodney Bennett and Interim Athletic Director Jeff Mitchell said in a joint statement on Wednesday.

OK, sure... but...then the Head Coach calls out the University President, in a statement.

quote:

“"Although I respect the decision of Dr. Rodney Bennett, I disagree with it. I am so grateful for the grace and forgiveness God gives me which allows me to inherit his kingdom, which I do not deserve. I have interviewed for an assistant position at Southern Miss and I believe he is a man who believes a second chance. He is a man that seemed sincere and humble in his interview and personally he committed no crime. He may not have acted in the proper protocol but that would be my JOB at Southern Miss. He was interviewing for an assistant position even thought I believe he will be a head coach at a major program in the near future. However, I believe he is a man who does love the Lord and deserves a second chance. He has been banned from a job in college football for three years and has been punished. I understand both sides have opinions, this is just mine."”

Hattiesburg is full of Baptists, so maybe the locals will appreciate the Bible-Thumping by the coach. But, I can't imagine the University President is happy with this statement.

Agreed. I had to Google the Bengals new coach when I thought it was going to be on TD.

Having attended there, Southern Miss is currently a shite show and their athletic department as much of one.

They are on a shoestring budget watching their former rivals like Louisville, Tulane, Houston, etc move onto better pastures while they are in the glorified Sun Belt 2.0.

Not that I approve of Briles but beggars can’t necessarily be choosers when you are a below average athletic department. And one who served as Larry Eustachy’s rehab assignment after getting busted for carousing with students at that.

Edit - On top of all that, the school presidency has been as stable as a Central American dictatorship for about 15 years.

I don’t know if Fleming was necessarily loved 15-20 years ago but every one of his successors has had major resistance from various factions of the faculty.

When did you attend? I was there from 98-00.

By your SN I'm guessing you were a TKE? They had tried to get me a bid (not sure of how since I never went through rush) but I was working while in school and just decided to never join a fraternity. But they were some interesting people.

98-02.

Was only active for 98-99 because the chapter was dysfunctional to say the least. Some really good guys in there but also some individuals who attacked others for real or perceived slights.
