Belichick wanted to trade Brady for Jimmy Garoppolo after losing to Philadelphia in Super Bowl LII. He spoke to Washington, Miami, and the New York Giants after Robert Kraft refused to allow Brady to be let go. The very next year they won the Super Bowl.

quote:

Asked about his work reporting the story in 2018, Wickersham included an interesting tidbit of knowledge regarding Belichick.

“There was a lot of pushback to that story. But, I felt comfortable with what I was writing and what I was working on,” Wickersham explained. “At the time, I think there was a sense that Brady wasn’t going anywhere and Bill left the impression that he might be open to a move.

“There were some reports that came out at the time that the Giants were looking at him,” Wickersham continued. “I think he talked to the Washington Football Team and the Dolphins about sort of their openings. And it was unclear whether he was interested or not, but he was still talking to them and subsequent reporting has only sort of shown how in that offseason, Brady skipped the offseason program for the first time in his career and he had just kind of had enough.”

Wickersham remembered that while Belichick and Brady ultimately put their differences aside for another two years (including a victorious Super Bowl run at the end of the 2018 season), the internal disagreements became more public in that time.

“It was a fascinating offseason,” Wickersham recalled. “Remember, [Brady] got up on stage in Los Angeles at that tech conference and he said, ‘I plead the fifth’ when asked if he felt appreciated. We never heard that language out of Tom Brady before. It was an interesting offseason to say the least.”

Belichick is the curly hallman of the nfl. Rode the coat tails of the goat and is crashing back to earth. Nothing but a system coach

Where does it say that in this article?

ETA this is the worst kind of reporting. Make it vague enough that you can stretch it to be as controversial as possible, but also completely distance yourself from it when proven false

The part where it says that he spoke with those aforementioned teams about potential openings?

Where it says they have no idea if he was interested or looking or not most likely they were talking to him about potential candidates for their jobs that are former BB disciples. But he left just enough wiggle room in that statement to get the flashy headline and not actually say anything

Wild how anyone could think after that eagles game that Tom fricking Brady was the problem. How about get a defense or an offensive line worth a frick

I'm just posting what was reported. If you disagree with it then you are more than capable of penning an op-ed about how this reporter was wrong for even insinuating Belichick was trying to leave. Either way, I think it's an open secret that all was not right with their relationship in those final two or three years.

Their oline did just fine up until that last sack. They punted what, once? Eagles just weren’t being stopped that year. Nick fricking Foles leading a team to a SB is the definition of destiny lol

Brady choked because he got pressured. He’s been pampered his entire career.

First it was Brady was the system QB. Now Bill's the system coach

My only guess is Bill laid awake at night thinking about how if he had a faster qb that trick play would’ve worked and he would’ve won

Kraft is surely the cheapest owner in sports history to have a dynasty. Brady just proved again why he is who he is and Belichick has won nothing without him. Bill's on the clock.

How the hell is he pampered when he's won 7 Super Bowls? It's becoming more and more clear that he was responsible for 90% of the success in New England

I think Bill is sub .500 without Brady. He has about the same winning percentage as Saban with the Dolphins.

It wouldn't shock me, but Wickersham has a vested interest in keeping this story alive, so there is bias there.
