Removing Bird's Rights when trading an NBA player - will this help small markets?

this seems to be the only realistic way that I can see small markets having a real chance to consistently keep their stars. would Kawhi Leonard be as easily manipulated by his handlers if a trade would to a bigger market loses his BRs? that would mean that best case he has to sign as a FA and he's in the same boat, salary-wise AND has to wait until those teams have the cap room for that deal

or, with the new TV deal, are the salaries simply too much and players will still take the salary cut?

Or how about small markets just get better and be a place players want to play

As an aspiring ornithologist, I'm against removing bird's rights.

The only thing that would fix it would be getting rid of max contracts and putting in a hard cap.

However, yeah, Bird Rights being eliminated in trades would be a pretty big deal.

That would help, but opportunities in LA are always going to be bigger for superstars than they will be in any small market, so the salary is offset at best.

When a player is making more money off the court than he is on, do you think bird rights are going to persuade him to stay in a small market?

Increasing the benefit to staying would certainly help but it’s a slippery slope. Guys are currently passing up an insane amount of money to go to a bigger market/city they want to be in, so there’s only so much you can do when they are defying all Normal logic.

Dont know what the NBA can do to give more incentives for players to remain with the teams that have drafted them. They give them longer deals and more money. If guys turn that down then I dont know what else is there to do

Losing with a small market team is much more costly to an NBA superstar than any amount of money they league could leverage with a shitty franchise like the Kings.

Agreed. But there's nothing the NBA can do to change that. It's a crappy situation but it just is what it is

Or a second round of RFA that can only last two or three years, but the players would never agree to that

The NBA makes the most money when LA and Boston are at the top. Those teams get to the top by having the best players. Do you see where I'm going with this?

Getting rid of the cap and max salaries would actually help the small markets. If Utah was offering someone 5 year 400 million some star would take it

But that wouldn't stop any other team from doing the same. Removing the incentive to staying with the original team wont help small markets

Utah wouldn’t have the ability to offer than, certainly wouldn’t be able to compete with a team like golden state for that players services given the comparative resources those teams would have

Baseball has this problem and they have the luxury of being able to control young talent for years without letting those players hit FA. NBA couldn’t recreate that advantage for its smaller market teams

He's not totally off since I don't recall New York, L.A. , Chicago, Philly, Atl. , D.C. etc...... exactly plundering small markets and taking all of their talent. New York , Chicago & L.A. have been somewhat laughingstocks in free agency for 2 decades( until LeBron).

Outside of Durant( whose move was more about the tiny size of his testicles than market size) I haven't seen a serious issue.

I'm not saying this isn't totally without merit ,but I believe it's more perception than reality.
