Re-visiting some of the BCS’s controversies...
Posted by TexasTiger08 on 8/22/19 at 2:14 pm82
I know this argument will begin and end with 2003...or 2004...or 2011.
But it seemed like there were many other close calls that the system had to sort out.
In its first year, undefeated Tennessee was a lock, but why was Florida State ushered in over Ohio State? The Bucks one loss was a close call against a Saban-coached Michigan State team. They racked up 4 wins over ranked opponents.
FSU had 5 wins over ranked opponents, but were handled easily in a loss to NC State. NC State and MSU were 6-6 and 7-5 respectively. Am I the only one that thinks Ohio State was the better team of the two that year?
2000 is one of my favorite debates to look back upon. Undefeated OU was a look, but 1-loss Florida State was selected over the following 1-loss teams:
Miami
Washington
Oregon State
Virginia Tech
The easy argument is for Miami. They beat FSU (#1 at the time) and VT (#2 at the time).
Washington was Miami’s lone defeat. The Huskies loss was to a ranked Oregon team on the road.
Ironically enough, Oregon State’s lone loss was to Washington (by 3), and the Beavers racked up wins over #7 USC and #5 Oregon.
I think any of those 3 teams snags more than 2 points against Oklahoma. I’m not so sure OU even wins the game against any of them. 3 impressive bowl wins for Or. St, Miami, and Wash.

at thinking "saban coached" mattered one iota in 1998.

I mean, he was a good coach then. They were a .500 team during his early seasons, then went 10-2...and we all know what happened then.
I didn’t mean the comment to suggest that it gives more credibility to a loss. I just meant it as a fact.

What a boring game. 13-2. Yuck.

The biggest BCS controversy has to be a team not winning its conference, or even its division, and still making it into the NCG

IMO the years where the BCS objectively got it wrong:
2000: 1-loss Florida State lost to 1-loss Miami who lost to Washington. Washington should've been in.
2001: Nebraska got blown out in their final game. After all of the chaos of the last few weeks, Oregon should've been in.
2003: Oklahoma got blown out in the conference title game. Should've been LSU-USC.
2007: Controversial opinion, but I believe Hawaii deserved a shot. Sure, they had a weak schedule, but Ohio State was the only P5 team with less than 2 losses (besides Kansas, but putting them in would've been unfair to Missouri). So why not give Hawaii a shot?
2011: This is obvious. I've talked about it so much. Oklahoma State had stronger wins than Alabama and hadn't already played LSU.

No, you're right. Ohio State was better than Florida State that year. However, FSU clearly had the better resume.
Defeated a Texas A&M team that won the Big 12 and finished the regular season ranked in the top 10
Defeated a top 25 Miami team in the Orange Bowl
Defeated a Georgia Tech team that finished ranked #12 in the final regular season AP poll 34-7 on the road
Defeated a Virginia team that finished ranked #13 in the final regular season AP poll 45-14
Defeated a Florida team that finished ranked #7 in the final regular season AP poll 23-12
FSU beat two top 15 teams by 27 and 31 points. They beat a top 10 team in Florida by double digits and also beat a top 10 team that won their conference in Texas A&M. OTOH, Ohio State beat no top 10 teams, only one team that finished the regular season ranked in the top 15 (Michigan), and two teams who were barely ranked inside the top 25 (Penn State and Missouri). I don't see how a case could be made that Ohio State had a better resume than Florida State. You would have to be really biased towards Ohio State to believe that.

2001 was a pretty big one.
Nebraska was undefeated going into the final weekend of the season but got annihilated by Colorado. So Nebraska, who didn't even play for their conference title while getting blown out in the final game, finished 2nd in the BCS.
Oregon lost one game as well, in the middle of the season, against what ended up being a 2-loss (regular season) Stanford team, on the road, by 7.
You could probably argue Tennessee as well, who lost one regular season game by 2 points, and then lost the SEC Championship game.
Prior to the SEC Championship (played a week later than the Big 12 probably due to Sept 11 makeup games), the coaches poll was: Miami, Tennessee, Oregon, Nebraska, Colorado
After all of the conference championships, it was Miami, Oregon, Colorado, Nebraska, Florida, Maryland, Illinois, Tennessee.
Obviously the BCS formula contained more factors than just the two polls, but the AP Poll had the same top 4 at the end of the season (Miami, Oregon, Colorado, Nebraska). Tennessee got screwed because they played (and lost) the extra game that Nebraska didn't have to play.

Good thing the playoff system fixed that, right?
Honestly, I preferred the BCS to what we have now. It certainly wasn't perfect, but the computer rankings eliminated human error.

This game still triggers me.
Tech was really good that year. They lost the opener to Boston College inexplicably (what a horrible game that was) but otherwise ran through the rest of the season (except the FSU game).
The week before they came back from 21 points down in the 4th quarter to beat top 10 UVa, so I think College Gameday was in town for the FSU game. The GT/FSU game was 7-7 at halftime and FSU led 10-7 after 3. They got lucky when Joe Hamilton got hurt in the 3rd qtr and ended up blowing the game open against our shitty freshman backup (who also ended up being really good as a Jr/Sr).

lol, no. They played NOBODY all year besides Boise state, who ended the year with 3 losses. What was their next toughest test..nevada? La Tech? They're no different than modern day UCF, a team that goes undefeated by running through an atrocious schedule. And of course hindsight is 20/20, but we all saw what happened in the bowl game that year when they played a legitimate team. It was so lopsided it was like the 2 teams weren't even playing the same sport.

No. If there was a playoff in 1998, Ohio State would have rolled through it.

The best team they played was 4-9 Washington and it took a miracle comeback for them to win that game. Georgia ran the most vanilla gameplan I have ever seen in the Sugar Bowl that season and still won 41-10 after taking their foot off the gas. Georgia could have won that game 63-3.

It was probably Cooper's best team, but they lost too late and had too far to climb back. FSU needed a crazy final Saturday with K-State and UCLA both getting upset just to have a shot.
FSU lost early, and were in the national title hunt annually in the 90s. On the other hand, Ohio State hadn't won a national title in 30 years, and had developed a reputation for choking. FSU was going to get benefit of the doubt in the polls, particularly after beating Florida.

Arizona State was undefeated going into the Rose Bowl in 1997-1998.
ETA: Sorry, I was getting my Cooper choke years mixed up. We blew it against Michigan in 1997-1998 and could have won a title this year as well.

-1998 was an absolute joke. Bama didn't get in despite a win @ Tiger Stadium and beating Auburn in the Iron Bowl. You could point to their poor road record, but a BCS title game would have been on a neutral field, so you can't really hold that against them.
-1999 was an all-time travesty. A lot of teams had arguments that season, but no snub was shocking as the bullshite Championship Series leaving out a 10-win Alabama team. Their losses? A one-point heartbreaker to Louisiana Tech (a strong Tech team that had Karl Malone at the time), and a two-TD loss to Tennessee that was closer than it looked.
-2000 was a weird one. The usually reliable computer algorithms must have been on the fritz or something, because by my calculations, a 3-8 Alabama team with a win over 23rd ranked South Carolina should have been in the mix for the #2 spot going in to bowl season. Yes, they got shutout twice, but they light up the scoreboard for 38 points in a home loss to UCF.
-2001: No title game for Bama. Uh, hello. They beat UTEP 56-7. 56-7! Was the committee out to lunch for that game??
That's enough rage for now. I'll be back later.
