re: Rays likely moving to Ybor
The Trop is in such a boring part of Tampa-St Pet. At least Ybor will have things to do in walking distance.

That whole area has been built up. There's plenty to do within walking distance

Who the hell is going to drive from Orlando in that nightmare traffic for a Rays game?

WDAE (local radio) quoted that in St. Pete, there's like 600k people within 30 minutes of the Trop. >2m within 30 minutes of Ybor.

This. It's fricking nightmare having to drive in rush hour traffic on I4. Leaving for a game at 430 that starts at 7 sucks.

The Rays thinking is that if they put a new stadium in Tampa it will draw more people from the Orlando area. Ybor is a more central location. They will draw more fans from the Orlando area and the I-4 corridor than they will lose from the Clearwater/St. Pete/Sarasota areas.
No doubt.

I know I'll still hop my arse over Gandy to see them. Plus now more people from Orlando might come. Lakeland and all the other towns along the way.

You have to leave work early to get to get to the Trop on time from Lakeland. It's out of the damn question from Orlando because if you leave Orlando early you still hit Tampa/Howard Frankland traffic. Want to have a few drinks before a game? You better leave Orlando at 3 at the latest.

It won't be as difficult now.

MLB teams in Florida is a mistake. Florida is for spring training and the Florida State League. You have more Yankee fans due to spring training in Tampa than Rays fans. Winter Haven has more Sox fans, Lakeland has more Tigers fans.

No they're not. There is just more for people to do. All coastal cities with MLB teams have the same problem. Ever been to a game in San Diego? MLB is more interested in corperate season ticket holder, and new stadiums with a view that look great on TV. That's how ad revenue is generated. This has been their MO since the 90s. I love the Tampa area. A new stadium will do great there.

ETA:

Just to add, I am completely against tax payer funds being routed to stadiums. The expections are specific hotel taxes around the stadium, or the city gets a % of the sell in the event the owner sales the team. This prevents owners like the ex-Marlins guy who shafted south FL tax payers.
