I've been to several MLB games in various cities and can confirm the Trop is a DUMP. It is by far the worst stadium in MLB

Same here....and the Oakland Coliseum says "not so fast, my friend".

But point well taken. The Trop is definitely 2nd worst.

Haven't been to Oakland but you're probably right.

unnecessary new stadium

I mean if you want your area to have a pro baseball team it is necessary. The Trop is an enormous trash can that is very hard to get to

Have been to many MLB stadiums. Why is the top not good enough for a team that has poor yearly attendance issues? I certainly don't want to pay for a new stadium when the Rays will have attendance issues a few years after building the new stadium.

Because the owners can and will move the team elsewhere

That metro area would do well to build a high speed rail connecting DTSP/Beaches/Tampa/Ybor

I disagree. O.co is a dump and I’m glad it’s going away but the trop is the absolute worst of the worst

Ybor is still not a place you wander around, although I've heard it has gotten better. The growth in the downtown St. Pete area has been incredible. I think most of this has to do with St. Pete not wanting to foot the bill on an unnecessary new stadium
I was forced to go to Ybor about a month ago. First time I had been in years.

I was blown away by how much better it was. Legitimately shocked.

And yes, downtown St. Pete is growing like crazy. They just put some massive condo things next door to my apartment on 5th. My new neighbors drive Lambos and G Wagons. I'm not sure how much longer my little apartment will last

re: Rays likely moving to Ybor
Went to a Rays/Red Sox game about 5 years ago. Got tickets the day of, and I think we were about 5 rows back on the visitors side, and right next to the Boston dugout. Between innings I went down to the rail and stood there and got my buddy to take a pic. Security just looked at me and was like "meh."

It was fun for a baseball game that I didnt care about either team.

Actually what they should do is purchase Steinbrenner field and play there. Having the Yankees training facility in your back yard next to the bucs stadium is pretty demoralizing.

The popularity of the rays here doesn't support creating a new stadium funded by the taxpayers. Just doesn't make any sense. There is nothing wrong with that stadium with the current state of the team.

I've said for years the Rays should have bought Al Lang in St. Pete and upgraded it. Still my favorite ball park and right on the water

DTSP is convenient for Tampa, Clearwater, St. Pete, Bradenton/Sarasota. It's also a lot nicer than Tampa. Traffic from St. Pete to Tampa is 100x worse. The Ybor location will make it a PIA for St. Pete residents and Bradenton/Sarasota residents.

I prefer it in St. Pete too. I don't have many issues getting to Amalie, but it is definitely not as easy as a trip up to the Trop. Not to mention I much prefer downtown St. Pete. Sarasota/Bradenton is a very important market for them, so they have to be careful.

Stadium could be 25k and they will still struggle to fill

South FL is just a terrible place for professional sports with few exceptions

I4/ Malfunction Junction is already a mess to deal with.
Cant imagine how much worse this will get.

Exactly. Moving this to Ybor will be well over an hour from Bradenton and over an hour and a half from Sarasota.

Pinellas County was MAGA in 2016 after going blue in 2012. You can see how all the Puerto Ricans made Orlando deeper blue in 2016 than in 2012 before they moved there en masse

That stadium could be MLB caliber fairly easily. Just need a third section above the two existing levels and then extend the existing lower two levels out to the foul poles

From what I know about the area I agree, but then people will bitch about them moving. Because it is a guarantee they would move if they don’t get a new park

They have 2 options. Get a new stadium or lose the team. MLB has its eyes on expanding to 32 teams but they are waiting on the rays and A’s to figure out their stadium situation. If they drag their feet they’re finished. The Rays thinking is that if they put a new stadium in Tampa it will draw more people from the Orlando area. Ybor is a more central location. They will draw more fans from the Orlando area and the I-4 corridor than they will lose from the Clearwater/St. Pete/Sarasota areas.

I think there is still potential for the Rays to be a big draw. They have always been a fun team to observe from afar.
