In his prime he was an fricking beast. But like many others in combat sports he stuck around way longer than he should have which tarnished his legacy.

As a very casual UFC fan, is this what makes Khabib smart in retiring?

BJ got by on raw talent until his allergy to actually training caught up with him. Kinda like Jimmy Harden.

In addition to losing his dad, I think Khabib just got bored. He was so dominant, there's not a lightweight that did or would have come close to him. Maybe an Oliveira bout would have been intriguing. He could have probably gone on 3-4 more years.

Plus it's only a matter of time before Islam Makhachev takes that title with Khabib in his corner

Not at all. The man kicked a vagina into another man’s head. Diego Sanchez I think.

His issue was weight and cardio. Seemed if he stayed at 155 he was natural and a monster. Tried to go up to GSP weight and he looked a little fluffy and would gas out. My assumption is the cardio has to suffer when you are trying to keep a few extra pounds.

Not at all. Dude was a beast early in his career and fought in multiple weight classes.

Not at all. Baby J was a beast and in his prime was the best boxer in the UFC while also maybe having the best bjj game. BJ Penn was the real deal.

For his time at that point in UFCs history he was a beast. In todays ufc where kids start mma training at 5 years old… he would be above average

He was one of the 1st guys ( that I remember ) to really be more of a mixed martial artist and less reliant on one discipline. Not overrated but definitely had his peak at the right time

Exactly. He was the opposite of a weight bully. He wanted to fight everyone.

It was probably more than that. Before the 2nd GSP fight the pre-fight TV series followed BJ Penn's training and pretty much all of the cardio he did was jogging around Hilo at barely more than walking pace except for the one day when he did the workout that involved running underwater with a rock. Even then he just did one or two reps and spent more time talking about it than actually doing it. He still went 4 rounds with GSP after totally slacking off cardio. Dude was that gifted.

Yep, he was one of the first guys that had his black belt in BJJ on the islands. He always had a solid boxing base too.

He had worked with Marv Marinovich for the couple of fights before that where he looked finally good even though he wasn't test that much with it being Florian and Diego or whoever. But he goes back to having his bum brother holding pads for him as his workout for the rest of his career here forward.

That was also the fight GSP got caught being greased up to slip out of submissions but nothing ever came of it. Dana was on camera in the crowd telling Rashad and some others GSP got caught greasing and is in big trouble.

UFC had overtaken nfl as my favorite sport.
1. Fewer commercials.
2. Refs has less impact on the outcome
3. Little to no showboating during fights
4. Not oversaturated. Once a month, you spend 4 hrs watching an event.

IMO BJ and Frank Mir suffered from the same issues.

They got comfortable training by themselves and not pushing themselves against great training partners.

This lead to lazy and comfortable training that caused them to never evolve as fighters. It also severely hurt their stamina and ability to overcome tough situations.
