OK, prime Rafa and prime Djok were better than post-prime Fed. I

that not post prime Fed. That's just Fed not cleaning up against shitty competition.

But the rest of the field wasn't, which was the overall point.

We already knew Fed can beat mediocre competition.

and also a ridiculously underrated Andy Murray

No one got fricked more in an individual sport than Andy Murray. Think Phil Mickelson, but there are 3 tiger woods.

He played Fed or Joker in 10 of his 11 GS finals

He lost in the SF or Finals of a GS 18 times, twice was to someone not from the big 3.

I say they end up:

Rafa -22
Fed - 21
Djok - 21

Rafa undisputed king of clay
Djokovic best returner
Fed best overall game

Splitting hairs to say who is best all time. Absolutely incredible that 3 different guys could amass 20 majors over roughly the same timeframe.

I would say Federer winning 5 consecutive at both the US Open and Wimbledon is pretty strong and having at least 5 of 3 different majors gives him the edge. But the other 2 still have time to build the resume while Roger's window is closing.

I think when Roger stopped winning US Opens speaks volumes.

Interesting post from the great great Jeff Sackman.

Not all 20s are created equal

He goes through all of the draws for the big 3 in the majors they won and then comes up with an adjusted major tally.

The article is worth reading, but I'll give the money shot below:

(Player) (Actual Slam (Avg. Draw Score) (Adjusted Slams)
Nadal__ (20) (0.95) (19.0)
Djokovic (17) (1.06) (18.1)
Federer_ (20) (0.89) (17.9)

Federer has 1 grand slam loss that isn't vs Nadal and Joker. It was Del Potro. He also is 3-0 vs Murray in finals.

Nadal has 1 grand slam loss that isn't vs Federer and Joker. It was Wawrinka and he's 1-1 vs him in the finals.

Joker has 4 grand slam losses that aren't vs Federer or Nadal. He is 0-2 vs Wawrinka and 5-2 vs Andy Murray

Joker has also won more majors against oponents not named Federer and Nadal as well. Its really not even close as to who is 1-2 and then 3.

The competition from the field isn't as good as it use to be and Joker has been fortunate with Nadal and Federer injuries or set backs the last few years.

I believe Federer sits at the top considering at age 39 and after several injuries he is still competing with Nadal and Joker and has a chance to win more majors. I highly doubt we can say that for Nadal or Joker in 6 years.

If 39 y/o Federer after several injuries is still #4 and competing against a younger Nadal/ Joker then its crazy to think he isn't the greatest of all time.

To put into perspective, we can still say Federer has a chance to beat Nadal or Joker. If Federer was 33 and Nadal/ Joker were 39 they wouldn't have a fighting chance.

Well, we don't know that for sure, yet.

I would guess that at age 38, Rafa will no longer be playing tennis. So I would agree with you, but it's still just a guess at this point.

I do think Novak will still be playing tennis at 38 years old, and it wouldn't surprise me if he were still playing at a high level.

People keep bringing up this narrative.

Fed hasn't beaten Joker in a GS since 2012(age 30)

Fed went 0-6 against Nadal in GS from 2008-2016(age 26-34)

Feds 2017 AU win against Nadal in the final was impressive, I'll give you that.

He's gone a combined 4-14 against Nadal and Joker in grand slams since 2010, where he entered the season a 28 year old.

I'd say Federer's prime ended around 2011. He had 16 GS at that time before Joker had 2. He swept Andy Roddick in all 4 GS and swept Murray in 3 GS. He has also had to battle Nadal and Joker both at the best of their career.

Joker has blown 4 GS to Wawrinka and Murray along with letting Nadal have his number. Federer is 1-4 vs Joker in GS but took him to 7 in 3 of those losses.

How about the narrative that Joker has underperformed? Nadal was injured in 2012, Murray got hurt, Federer is older and banged up. Why doesn't Joker have more? 9/17 of his GS aren't even against either Federer or Nadal.

I think lots of people agree, his mental game seems to be fickle.

Also whatever weird Serbian pods he’s sleeping in or odd diet. Still wouldn’t be surprised if he was doping.

Well that is Nadal on Clay and it isn't close. He has 100 wins there and has lost twice in 16 years. That is one of the craziest feats in pro sports. No one will be anywhere near that anywhere.
