Hoping for some help with two of my kids. We are doing a team party for a 3rd grade flag football team. I have two kids that didn't do much on the field. One of the moms is doing awards and all I could come up for them was the sportsmanship award and the hustle award. Now, these are kids that have never actually caught a ball in a game, or gained a yard on a run, so I am looking for help with how to describe them when I give them their awards.

Came up with this for them, but looking for suggestions from other coaches on how I can spruce that up so it doesn't sound to lame.

Did what was asked of them, good attitudes, respectful and grew from game to game

Nothing, stop giving awards to every kid. That’s what is wrong with the world, everyone is soft and feel entitled.

I laugh at it now but I was happy to get an award for something along those lines back in 8th grade. Good job doing this for the kids.

I was dogshit at sports as a kid, so at the 8th grade football banquet I remember our defensive coach talked about how I always worked hard at practice and helped the offensive 1's get ready for the next week's game. So I guess that's something, working hard in practice

They aren't getting trophies...I am not one of those coaches. We give them team specific awards like most sacks, most TDs, Best defender. These kids literally have done no positive football plays and I am just trying to give them something without it being a "you were there" award.

Were any of them always on time? Most punctual award?

Did any of them always come prepared? Most prepared award?

Do yourself a favor and don’t give out any awards for individual players. It always comes back to bite you in the arse.

Your intent is to do something special for the kids and feel like a well-run team. But the result will be jealous parents bickering about why Braxton didn’t get most TD’s AND the hustle award, too, etc. and you will lose players over shite like that.

Give them all the same award. Everybody gets pizza. Show them a PowerPoint slide show of all the great pictures everybody took this year. There. Done. You will look like a genius.

But you will certainly regret individual recognition at this age.

Give one award to the best player. Every kid can’t have a award

They're third graders. At that age, there's nothing wrong with giving them something to encourage them and reward them for their hard work, even if they weren't very good.

i refuse to believe that you weren't able to get two kids to have a positive football play all year in 3rd grade.
judging by your awards you want to hand out, you were more worried about winning than making sure you made sure all the kids played and got better, and felt like part of the team.

I'd call it the "Did what was asked of them, good attitudes, respectful and grew from game to game" award

This is quite literally no different than 30 years when I was a kid playing sports, and at the end of the season every kid got a trophy or a ribbon or some shite.

This statement is used wayyyy too much and forgets that everyone actually did get participation trophies back when we were kids.

Everyone should get at least a certificate to show they played. It validates the parents by showing their time taking kids to practice was worth it as well

If you give specific awards for the kids I’d go team award and coaches award stating that X showed character perseverance or whatever positive adjective/modifier you want to use to describe their participation. Since it’s character based and your choice the parameters nobody should be offended. If they truly were as bad as you say they were it may provide motivation to continue in team sports which is huge gin building kids to adults.
