I like it

quote:

A College World Series in mid-July. An NCAA tournament beginning in early July. A college baseball season beginning the third weekend of March.

quote:

Those are all things that will happen beginning with the 2022 season if a set of recommendations assembled by a five-coach panel of Power Five coaches gets approval from other Division I coaches and passes at the highest levels of the NCAA in the coming months.

Good

Warmer for the northern schools. Also there will be less of a dead period. If the NBA moves to start in December, there will be sports year round.

Before I read the d1 piece I would have no way in hell. I didn’t even make it all the way through the piece before I was on board.

Would you rather be Africa hot at the Box or watch LSU in someone else’s regional?

Of all the things they could address with college baseball this is low on my list. Certainly there are some benefits by starting the season in warmer temps. But I don't like the idea of playing to end of July.

For starters, what's the MLB going to do with their draft? How many guys hang it up early or mail it in after getting drafted in the 1st. Or they get too preoccupied negotiating their signing bonus to finish the season.

Plus, the attendance it might generate for the northern schools is minimal. Their model shows double-digit % increases later in the season..but thats starting from a baseline of like 500-1000.

I wonder how this will affect the Cape League and the other summer leagues since they start in June

Yeah, there’s plenty of summer leagues that will be done in by this.

When students leave at the end of the semester, you will have smaller crowds at stadiums, including in the SEC.

The MLB is already looking to push the draft back to July anyway. They're trying to eliminate two levels of short season baseball.

So this new format is the only way to get postseason baseball at the Box?

Conferences have a 25 or 27 man limit for series, and postseason is also like 27.

So that leaves about 8 players available to go to summer leagues early. They will be able to get more playing time there than they would in the midweek games still left on the schedule so it's a win for their development.

Now, that would really only apply to the leagues below the Cape, like Northwoods and Prospect. Plus the HS, JUCO, D2, D3, and NAIA guys.

The very top of the JUCO, D2, D3, and NAIA guys could start the Cape off for a few weeks. The Cape typically starts later than most leagues anyway. And with the talent bloat in college baseball going forward, they can still get premium talent primarily from the JUCO ranks.

ETA: With the draft being pushed back anyway, draft eligible guys will still want to go to the Cape.
